The cleanup maybe be hanging because of the location.  You may be able to 'Reveal In Finder' and delete the file manually.  Open the Quarantine Manager and see what the path to the item is.  Where is it located?  Screenshot the window and post back if necessary.

In that case try opening Console (select the magnifying glass in the top right corner and search for Console), select the Sophos Anti-Virus log and search for the detection.  Maybe the path will be recorded in there.  Example:

If that doesn't show anything use the Quarantine Manager and clear the item from the list and then run a new scan - it may not show up again (i.e., it was in a temp location the first time around).

still couldnt find path. 

i cleared the item from the list and ran the scan. it seems to have stopped scanning with 64107 items remaining. it reports that issues

have been detected but no threats found (obviously so far). i cant seem to get the scan to continue. it is stuck and i cant close it down

to start again.

'Seems' is right - probably working away in the background.  It's probably just working through a large file (like a bundle file) or folder.  Give it time.

The 'Issues detected' are generally nothing to worry about.  See this post.

ok i will let it run for a while but it still seems stuck to me.

Keep an eye on the 'SophosAVAgent' process with Activity Monitor.  Example:

It may help to enable the 'Bytes read' column (View > Columns 'Bytes Read').

it is still not going anywhere. i have never known it to stick for so long so there must be a problem somewhere. any thoughts?

If the Bytes Read and other columns aren't showing any signs of movement you could 'Force Quit' the SophosAVAgent process from Activity Monitor.

ok ive done that. i will try a rescan and see what happens

i am shutting down for a while so will resume contact at a later date if there are still problems.
