notification that i have this is sitting in my quarantine manager. action available says it can be cleaned up but when i opt for this it just says clean up in progress but
no clean up takes place (spinning disc!).
virus would seem to affect only windows operating systems but i feel uncomfortable with it just sitting there.
how can i effectively remove it?

In that case try opening Console (select the magnifying glass in the top right corner and search for Console), select the Sophos Anti-Virus log and search for the detection. Maybe the path will be recorded in there. Example:
If that doesn't show anything use the Quarantine Manager and clear the item from the list and then run a new scan - it may not show up again (i.e., it was in a temp location the first time around).
