Unable to remove threat using custom scan

After running my first scan of Mac have discovered a threat (Troj/FakeAV-DOP) on the external hard drive.  Was advised that this could not be automatically deleted and I had to clean up the threat manually.  I have located the exact file, run a custom scan with the option of deleting the file - however the file is not deleted and keeps re-advising custom scan.  I have also tried putting the file in the trash but 'back-up files' cannot be deleted.

I am slightly  out of my depth now and would very much appreciate and help - thanks!

  • If it lets you do it, just drag the file to the trash.  Failing that, open terminal.app, type

    rm

and drag the file to the terminal window.  Press return, and it should delete it.

The file is Windows malware, so it's not going to cause problems or run on your Mac.

  • Hi,

I am having great difficulty removing a threat (Troj/Wimad-E). I operate a Mac OS X system and have never had virus issues until now (when I also recently downloaded Sophos for free to detect potential threats.) I chose the action available which was clean up and then was directed to manually clean up. I removed the file manually by deleting it but the file remains. Now I am no longer given the option to clean up but, rather, the option available is "clean up" although it appears to not work; the process runs on end for hours (5-6 hours) and then a message appears that it cannot be cleaned up and provides no other option. Please advise.

  • Do you have the current file path available as presented in Quarantine Manager?
