Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition (Free) not able to update

I'm trying to help a friend with a problem (I'm a Windows user, so please forgive my ignorance on some things Mac). We installed Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition without any apparent problem and everything seemed to be running correctly. The shield icon was in place without a cross and the signatures were recent. When I looked at the system the other day, the shield icon included a cross and inspection of the log showed that the program was unable to communicate with the Sophos servers. Trying to do a manual update failed.

I've Googled the problem and there seem to be others with a similar problem but I haven't found a solution. I'm going to try an uninstall and reinstall this morning but I'd be delighted if anybody here can offer some suggestions.

I'm experiencing the same problem with the Mac Home Edition. I use the stand-alone version. It installed and ran fine for about a month but around July 4th I started getting an "unable to contact primary server" message. Same for manual update attempts.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Perhaps I grouped my issue incorrectly. These suggestions appear to relate to installation. My installation was successful and it ran fine for a month or so doing automatic updates with no problem. Then around July 4th the updating began to fail and I get a message about not being able to contact the primary server, even when doing a manual update. The log shows:
com.sophos.autoupdate: Error: Could not contact secondary server at 11:53 on 11 July 2011
com.sophos.autoupdate: Access was denied
com.sophos.autoupdate:

As I said, the autoupdates worked fine for a month or so, then suddenly stopped.

July 1-4 was when the update to version 7.3.1 was rolled out; this update had an issue on some systems where the on-access scan was disabled until the next detection update. Have you restarted your computer since then? Have you clicked on the time in the menu bar?

I have rebooted previously and I just rebooted again and clicked the time in the menu bar too... Unfortunately, no joy...
Same message, etc. when trying to do a manual update.
