Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition (Free) not able to update

I'm trying to help a friend with a problem (I'm a Windows user, so please forgive my ignorance on some things Mac).  We installed Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition  without any apparent problem and everything seemed to be running correctly. The shield icon was in place without a cross and the signatures were recent. When I looked at the system the other day, the shield icon included a cross and inspection of the log showed that the program was unable to communicate with the Sophos servers. Trying to do a manual update failed.

I've Googled the problem and there seem to be others with a similar problem but I haven't found a solution. I'm going to try an uninstall and reinstall this morning but I'd be delighted if anybody here can offer some suggestions.

Thanks

  • I'm experiencing the same problem with the Mac Home Edition.  I use the stand-alone version.  It installed and ran fine for about a month but around July 4th  I started getting an "unable to contact primary server" message.  Same for manual update attempts.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks
