Sophos AutoUpdate Error

Hi

I have a recurring window that pops up every hour or so telling me that Sophos cannot contact the primary server. I thought I had disabled Sophos as I no longer wish to use it, but in my system preferences (Mac OS X Snow Leopard) I can't seem to find an option to uninstall!

I'm not entirely certain which version of Sophos I have, I downloaded it as required by my university in October 2008, so it may have been using a university subscription - to be honest I can't remember.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

  • Hello,

this must be the licensed version. Use Spotlight to find Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg (for version 7.x it's in MacHD/Library/Sophos Anti-Virus, for 4.x the path is MacHD/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus .

  • Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately when I searched for the file you named in Spotlight it doesn't appear to exist on my computer - I don't have a Sophos folder in my Library folder either...

    Any ideas?!

    Thanks again

EDIT: I think I deleted all files related to Sophos in an attempt to uninstall, so is there any way I can get them back or download something to allow me to uninstall properly?

  • Usually installing the product again also re-creates the uninstaller. And it might be wise to not do without any AV. Anyway you could try downloading an installing the Home Edition although it likely won't work with the crippled installation.

  • Thanks. I tried the new installation but got this message:

"Another version of Sophos anti-virus software, which is not compatible with this version, is already installed. You must remove that version before attempting installation again. "

So am I now stuck with an ever-recurring error message every hour?! Would it be worth contacting Sophos customer services or similar to get help? The error window is driving me mad!

    Thanks for all the advice,

    Rosie

  • Hello Rosie,

Another version of Sophos anti-virus software, which is not compatible with this version, is already installed

I feared that'd be the case (BTW - it's not gone if it does run :smileywink: so at least parts of it must reside somewhere ). Meanwhile I remembered that this has been answered in the Sophos FreeTalk forum. Unfortunately since that time the Sophos Website has been redesigned and while you still can request the required trial version the process is tedious. Please bear with the window for a short while (I've already sent an enquiry "in the background" and hope a solution will be found).

  • I'm really grateful for your help, thank you.

So for now I guess I'll have to grin and bear it... Frustrating that it's still running (sort of) even though it can't connect to the server and therefore presumably isn't actually doing any protecting for my computer!

Let's hope something turns up soon :)
