  • We also have this issue on two brand new HP devices:

HP Compaq 6005 Pro SFF PC

    HP ProBook 6465b

After installation, the device has the same behavior:

    Sophos Safe guard is staring.

    Please wait...

    No Init

Press any key to reboot, or switch off the system now.

We're running 5.60, and have tried toggling multiple hot-keys without any success.

  • We just had the same symptoms on an HP 2530p.  We're running version 5.50.0.116.  The computer had been in service and encrypted for several months, then the "no init" started.  It passed HP's hard drive diagnostics.  We reimaged the computer, and as soon as we installed SafeGuard, "no init" returned.  I was able to get it to boot normally with the Shift+F6 hotkey.

  • HI all,

thank you very much for posting. I have checked your posts and for those still using 5.5x of SGN I would recommend to retest with 5.60.1 please.

Should you still encounter and issue please follow the steps described here: http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/111919.html

If the issue is still existing after following the KBA it is required to open a new support call. When doing so please add a MSInfo32 saved as NFO to your initial mail.

    Regards

  • Hello, I'm new to Sophos and the guy that set up the encryption software is no longer here.  I'm having the same problem with an HP 2540p.  It just started a week ago.  I have other HP 2540p's here but they are not having an issue as of yet.  Why would only one machine have this problem?  Also, how easy is it to upgrade to 5.60.1?  Is it just a straight install or do I need to do something else?  Please advise.

  • Hi Edwin,

thank you very much for posting and welcome to SafeGuard =)

    1. Maybe the hardware setup is slightly different from the other machines although they are all the same model (we used to have that)

    2. In this case I would think that there is a device attached to the machine that causes the problem.

    3. The update is straight like that but please keep in mind that you will have to update the back end as well if you are not using 5.60.0 at least!

  • Hi Daniel, thank you for responding so quickly.  We usually get these laptops in bulks of 5 and all are on the floor but so far they are not giving us this problem.  Also, nothing is currently attached to the laptop.  Just the power adapter.  I guess my question would be, what do I need to update on the back end?  Right now all laptops that have Sophos encryption are using 5.60.0.

  • Hi Edwin,

in that case I assume that the back end is 5.60.0 as well so you can go straight on the client. If you want to update anyway then update the server and the management center - no need to touch the db at this point.

Besides that please check the hot keys and the BIOS version - see link in my first post for info on what to check and how to do that.

  • Dan, here's an update. I updated the local client to 5.60.1.   That didn't help.  I also updated the BIOS.  That didn't help either.  At this point, it sounds like I may have to open a ticket unless as you said it could be the actual machine.

  • One more thing.  I'm not sure if this was a good idea or not, but I backed up an image of the problem machine and pushed it down to a new machine.  Of course it seems as though the hard drive is encrypted and Sophos is still on it.  Will this be OK to do or should I just do a fresh machine and install the Sophos Encryption?

If this is OK to do, is there an easy way to change the computer name when you log on the POA?  It has the old computer name at the top of the logon screen.  Just curious.

  • Hi Edwin,

thank you for posting your test results and I agree that it will probably be better to open a ticket at this point. We can still point out the machine as the culprit (not too far away if it only affects one).

With regards to imaging that's a bit tricky. Unless you create an sector based image including bad sectors on the drive the system won't be in an operational state anyway. Besides this there is no easy way to change the name especially when using SafeGuard Easy or any unmanaged version for example. My recommendation would be to rebuild the machine with a non SGN image and then reinstall the software.
