Multiple virtual interfaces on one physical interface.

We own one SG 125 and our ISP is KabelBW. They provide multiple static public IP addresses, but via DHCP reservation, not as a subnet. We need to provide MAC adressess and can map each IP address to one MAC address.

I need to create five virtual interfaces, each having its own virtual MAC address. And they all need to obtain their IP address via DHCP. How do I do that?

  • With the UTM, you can only receive a single WAN IP Address via DHCP per interface.  Other addresses would then need to be added manually as Additional Addresses.

Get your WAN interface MAC address at  Interfaces & Routing > Interfaces > Hardware.  Setup your WAN interface (if you haven't already done so) as Type Ethernet DHCP, which should get you your first address.  Your other addresses should be the next ones in order and could probably be extrapolated from the netmask, but to confirm, you can call your ISP support to get them.  Then you can setup the others at Interfaces & Routing > Interfaces > Additional Addresses, one IP per entry.

What? Really? Are you kidding me? This is pretty much standard. Every freaking operating system can do that. Why not Sophos? I need that!
  •  Why not Sophos? I need that!

For this information, you would need to contact Sophos Support (this is a user-to-user forum, so there is no insight into design decisions), assuming you have a paid license (normally the case, since you have a Sophos appliance).

As with any other product, we need to resolve the issue with the way the UTM does work, not with the way we expect it to or wish it worked.

Since this is a German ISP, you may want to post in the German forum, https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/68,  as well.  There's a better chance of finding someone else using the same ISP in there who can say how they dealt with this issue.

  • Could you put a VLAN-capable Layer-3 switch in front of the UTM and achieve your goal with that?
