Fresh install - Can't get it to work

I've been all over the forum and Google, I read the manual but I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I can't get Internet access when I move the UTM to the border. I had it installed in bridge mode between my switch and router when I was doing the preliminary setup and it worked fine. I want to replace my router with the Sophos box. I even performed a fresh install when I moved it to the border.

I currently have a DSL connection with a block of static IP's. I used my old router settings as a guide. The external interface is set up as an Ethernet static. I even tried setting a Virtual MAC on the External interface so it matches my old router.

Right now, I just finished a re-install on the box. I used the wizard and that's as far as I've gotten on this go around. Should I be able to access the Internet after using the wizard or is there another step I'm missing in a basic setup? The wizard did set a masquerading rule and firewall rules but nothing under NAT.





Any suggestions on where I should start troubleshooting? I'm totally stumped.

    Hi,

    After running the wizard, you should have internet access, but you can do some tests...

    1. see if you can ping the internet from the firewall (make sure the ICMP settings are checked on under Network Security - Firewall - ICMP).

    2. make sure there is a Masquerading rule setup for your LAN (in NAT settings)

    3. make sure there are firewall rules for outgoing traffic

    Did you power cycle the modem?
    If that doesn't fix it, there might be an issue with the config of the external interface double check IP, netmask and default gateway settings.

    This make no sense to me... I've been using the same SnapGear UTM for several years, with the same settings and it still works to this very minute.

    I configured the Sophos UTM with the same settings used by the SnapGear but the Sophos box does not work.

    I called Verizon to verify the settings and they gave me a different default gateway to use. Now it works!

    I wonder why the SnapGear works with a different default gateway?

    Hi, I don't know about Verizon DSL, but I know for FiOS that power-cycling the ONT is not sufficient when changing hardware; I've always had to call in and ask them to 'break the DHCP lease'.

    Even though you're using static address, they may still have your MAC memorized.
    I don't know why changing the MAC didn't help, but maybe it doesn't work with your NIC? ifconfig should show the MAC in use, btw.
