Memory management / Swap file issue

if you are running v9 it's because of the utm software being two things:
1. buggy with several memory leaks
2.  The featureset and the resulting codebase has gotten so huge that the so-called minimum requirements aren't based in reality

in utm9 the realistic minimum ram is 4 gigabytes.

Determine what is using the swap, restart the process or open a support case.   Alternatively reboot (yuck).

My usual swap offenders:   snort (/var/mdw/scripts/snort restart), httpproxy (/var/mdw/scripts/httpproxy restart) and webmin (/etc/initd/httpd restart).

all of these are workarounds..[:)]  even with the memory leaks fixed i don't think 2 gigs is a realistic minimum if you have more than two features active and more than 5-10 users.  We'll see with upcoming versions.

William, I have a client with 57 active IPs at present and archived Web Filtering log files that run from 1.5-to-4MB for workdays.  They're on a server powered by an i3 with 7GB of RAM.  Over the last month, since installing V9 on this unit, max CPU was 40%, but averages under 2% and rarely gets to 5%.  Max RAM was 50%, but normally sits at about 30% about 2GB.  There has been NO swap since the installation.

Another client has a new 120 with 2GB of RAM and 13 active IPs, at present.  Average CPU is under 13%, usually about 20% during the day.  Web Filtering log files are about half of the first customer's.  RAM usage is normally under 70%, but sometimes gets up to 73% during the workday.  SWAP keeps growing, but I haven't figured out yet what causes that.  Of course, a reboot fixes it.

Both have Full Guard with Intrusion Prevention active.

At this point, I'm beginning to suspect that the issue is the release of space in the swap area as opposed to 2GB of RAM being insufficient.

nopers i can debunk that easily.  on the 2 gig machine login as root and issue swapoff -a and let it go for 24 hours..you'll see the box start getting oom errors and most likely more than a few outages as packet processing come to a halt as the system is simply too starved for ram to continue.

You should NEVER have to reboot a properly tuned Linux box(or windows server 2k3 and above for that matter) to "fix an issue".  That's not a fix and only covers it up.  The system isn't releasing the swap space because it know it is going to need it again.  That along with Sopho's predilection to NOT properly utilize file cache(aka releasing that) as well leads to the system using swap like that.

7 gigs you aren't going to swap on that machine unless you really start pounding it with traffic and/or you go nutso on the users..[:)]

7GB is a bit an unusual number; are you sharing the memory with something else (peripherals or VMWare)? If the memory modules are not the same make and specification it would not hurt to test your memory. If you want to make sure it’s not a memory issue you can download the Linux base SystemRescueCd ISO at SystemRescueCd. Boot from that CD and run Memtest+ for an hour or two.

Haaa, i get it now... the 120 is a totally different machine. Thought it was some kind of add on since it appear to be new (but came with only 2GB). Not sure what the 120 is; hope it's not a silly suggestion but can't he just upgrade the RAM? 8GB memory kit are very cheat these days if his machine can use DDR3.

there is no supported way to upgrade the asg appliances ram other than buying a higher end one..
