Intel Atom - Dual vs. Single core applicability

I'm getting my single core Atom 270 up today.  I have a dozen devices at my house that access the Net that ranges from VPN traffic to streaming media.  Granted I don't usually hammer my 20Mb cable connection and my previous Astaro box (which just died) only had 30 or so firewall rules my guess would be I'll be fine.  

I'll report back tomorrow on my initial results.

I am running a supermicro sever utilizing an Atom 330 (1.6 ghz Dual Core) with 2gb of DDR 2 ram. My hard drive is a Mtron Mobi 3500 SSD. The server has two Realteck Gigabyte NIC's. The box runs Astaro 7.502 with HTTP proxie, IPS, and Packet Filter Configured, with some blocking enabled. Currently my ISP is Verizon FIOS provisioned at 25/15. Upgrade to 35/35 underway. I have never seen the resource utilization over 25% for RAM and 8 to 10% for CPU with streaming video running on the TV and down loading concurrently. With the connection saturated the server/Astaro does fine. I am not using Email or antivirus scanning and don't intend to. The internal network has 10 devices behind the server attached to a Netgear switch.

I have a 330 dual core as a system backup. Something to fall back on during beta testing.

The mail difference is that most of the dual core motherboards I have found all use the standard desktop chipset which sucks a lot of power especially when compared to the cpu. At rest mine use about 40watts where as Barryg's at rest uses about 12watts.
The chipset has a fan where as the cpu has a passive heatsink.

I have the full suite of AV and proxies running for about 10 users/PCs.

I recently started trying Astaro on my home network with the idea of reselling to clients.  I am a cyber security instructor and do a small amount of consulting on the side mostly to small 1-2 doctor medical practice.  I think this will be a rapidly growing market here in the states due to new compliance legislation (HITECH) if it doesn't make solo practices uneconomical!  In the past I have recommended ipcop,smoothwall,and pfsense. However with the new changes and the increased logging etc requirements I am looking at commercial offerings.

As a result I reprovisioned a new Intel D510MO itx board I had runnin pfsense at home.  I am impressed with astaro.    My question is the default install froze up with the default boot loading the kernel.  It worked fine using the classsic option.  However uname -a indicates to me it is running the default single processor kernel rather than smp.   Is it possiable to use another option i.e. noacpi to see if the problem is something other that smp?

I am getting such good results with the single core kernel I would like to see what it will do running smp

That's a really good question. I too am looking at the N330 Atom based board, but for my home. I'm not sure it's needed, but If I'm going to build a new box I'd like to use the Jetway NC92 mini-itx board. (Atom N330, with 3xGbit daughter board). The existing box will be used on V7 until V8 is vetted and I can move it to my active firewall. The Dual core will be a huge improvement when using several of the ASG features (IPS, Virus, Proxies, VPN, etc) at the same time. I have a 25Mb/25Mb FiOS connection at my home and can download tons of files concurrently and watch HD on-Demand without bothering the single core VIA board I have now. Of course I don't currently use HTTP/Mail virus scanning or IPS.

For practical purposes though, V7 does, and V8 will most likely, work just fine on the single core machine for low traffic environments. The N330 is a great platform for smaller form factor machines that still need a little more oomph.

PS, I've tried ipCop and smoothwall (years ago), but I switched to Astaro because it is a superior product. In my opinion.

I use just about all of the filtering and generally, my memory utilization holds at bout 32% and the Procs never really get any dust blown off of them - super low utilization as well as minumal power needs.

Hi, does it hang during the installation, or after the reboot?

If during installation, you can press ALT-F1, ALT-F2, ALT-F3, to see the various installation messages, usually this is enough to figure out why it's failing.

Otherwise, perhaps a BIOS update or a future version of Astaro will help. Are you using the latest ISO for installation (7.502)?

Thanks for the quick response.   The day after I posted I ran accross another post about using "ALT-F1, ALT-F2, ALT-F3, to see the various installation messages".  I will try this when I get a chance on a second board I have to determine if it is the chipset or acpi.   I am running the latest bios:

I am pretty impressed with the performance I get even in single core mode.  Thru put is 
similar to what I was getting with pfsense 1.2.3 w/Snort, hapav etc.

I may have to change my recommendations for home and business fwalls!  The only real issue I have had is when setting up port forwarding (dnat) the automatic packet filter rules didn't work as expected.  Once I explicitly defined the packet filter rules and dnat every thing worked as expected.

I let myself get sidetracked playing with ACC 2.1 in vmware.   If I can get that working behind rras on sbs I will change for sure!  It snows and ices up here in Oklahoma and if I could manage the friends and family firewall from the comfort of home....!
