Install error- CD drive not found

It boots from the BIOS, and then Linux tries to load a driver.

Make sure the CD is set to Master or Cable Select with the jumpers.

If that still fails, you could try the 7.395 Beta ISO:
ftp://ftp.astaro.de/pub/Astaro_Security_Gateway/v7/beta/

Thanks, that does make sense.

I did try both Master and Cable Select jumper positions.

I just thought of two other options. I do have a different CD drive I could try. Or, I know I have older ISOs of Astaro that I know have worked. I'm not 100% sure that I've used that same exact CD drive in the past, but it could be worth a shot.

I tried a different CD drive, I still get the same error.

I even tried a v7.2 CD, and it also cannot find install disk.

I'll try the 7.395 ISO and see if that makes any difference.

Any other options?

Ok, I pulled a working CD / DVD burner out of a known working Fedora server, and I still get the same error. This is the third drive I've tried.

There isn't anything I need to change in the BIOS, since I'm able to boot off the CD, right?

It can't be a bad CD, since I tried v7.2 and also v7.395 disks.

I also replaced the IDE cable. Not that it should have mattered, but I thought I would try that as well.

Will Astaro install off a bootable USB drive?

Yes, a USB CDROM should work.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant a bootable USB flash drive. Will that work since Linux distinguishes it differently under /dev as opposed to a USB CD drive?

I think the ASG will support it but i never could get it to work.

So are you saying nothing else on the usb stick, create the bootable ISO on the usb stick and then boot the ASG with the usb stick in the ASG and all should work?

That's the Installer stick available from Astaro for $99.  It has CD emulation built-in.  And it should work just like plugging in a USB CDROM.  The ASG appliances are set to boot from a CDROM.  To do it with another device, make sure the boot process is set to boot from USB.

I spent a lot of time last year trying to do that.  I think the problem is with the bios on the computer refusing to boot from a USB hard drive.

I haven't tried it with Astaro, but many of the bootable Linux distros can boot from CD (e.g. Knoppix, SLAX, etc.); Most don't use an ISO, but rather a FAT filesytem on the USB stick, which can be booted with grub.
This is unlikely to help with Astaro as it's not expecting to install from a FAT fs.

For anyone interested, there's good directions for getting a USB stick to boot a FAT partition on the BackTrack Linux site, but that will only help with FAT, not with an ISO.

There are some posts here  detailing how to boot a Knoppix ISO, but you have to put a Linux kernel and initrd in a separate partition; getting it to work right with Astaro is possible, but probably difficult for an end-user.

Please ignore the ArsTechnica article linked from that thread; they seem to think that you can't boot from a USB stick unless it includes special software, which is incorrect (you just need to create a primary partition, set it bootable, and install a bootloader).

I have a strong suspicion that the official Astaro USB stick uses a boot partition as described above, but as I've never seen one, I can't say for sure. If I'm right, then one could easily be 'cloned'.

Can you run fdisk or windows disk management against it and see what kind of partitions are on it, etc.?

I don't.  I bet you can blow it away, but I don't think you can clone it.  The firmware in the thing emulates a CD instead of a hard drive.

Ok, so while I try to figure out trying a USB flash drive install - I still haven't figured out the source of the original problem.

Why won't Astaro install off a boot CD? I've tried three different CD drives and I keep getting "install CD not found". What else should I try / look for?

FYI - I've tried UNetbootin to make the ISO file into a bootable flash drive. I can boot off the USB drive, and it starts the installer. But I get as far as I do with the CD rom - I get the "no install CD found". I'm guessing that's because it doesn't use CD emulation.

Maybe this seems too simple, but have you tried to reburn your cd? Sometimes, what may appear to be a good cd burn, could have 1 file that didn't burn too good and won't work right regardless of what cd-rom you have it in. I had this happen the first time I tried to install Astaro and burned a new cd and everything went through just fine.

I didn't try that. But, I did try a known good v7.2 CD, and it gave me the same error.

I ended up buying an external USB CD drive, and that worked. Wish I could have figured out what the problem was with the internal drive.
