SSD health

Should I expect premature ssd failure if my swap usage is consistently in the 60 percent range? If so, is there any way to mitigate it? Seems that the UTM 110/120 Rev. 5 (2gb ram) should be able to handle the work load of a family home.

Depends on the SSD. Modern SSDs are still expected to last several years with continuous usage, so I think it would be fine. I do not know what SSD that model has in it, so I am not sure. I would think it would be okay though.

Modern or not, a consumer grade SSD isn't designed to stand up to the large amounts of small writes the the UTM produces. For most home use cases, the SSD won't produce a noticeable improvement over a basic consumer drive, and it will burn out sooner then the enterprise level disks.

I assumed the SSD is built into the device the OP was asking about. Perhaps I assumed too much.

Hi,

The smartctl tools are available on the console, but most SSDs won't tell you much through SMART.

Does anyone know if you he drives that Sophos uses are single layer or multi layer. I know that the high end single layer drives are superior. This UTM is a genuine Sophos UTM 110/120. I purchased it slightly used and have been running it in my home for several mths (I really enjoy the small form factor and minimal energy usage) but have no t opened it up to find out what kind of drive is in it.

utm series are all hdd based. SSD are not introduced until the sg3xx series IIRC.

Some information on the particular hard drive in your UTM can probably be found in the Support Config Dump via WebAdmin->Support->Config Dump. The support_package.zip files hwdump and swdump are text files. hwdump probably contains the drive model and serial number. swdump probably contains partition and space utilization.

The command line offers many more options and opportunities for information (dmesg, smartctl, etc).
