[home edition] torrent download -> time out, unable to resolve dns

Is your upload maxed when you connect to torrents?  If so, you may be saturating your connection.  This is most common where your using DSL with a much lower upload than download rate.  I had this myself on my old DSL connection.  7.1 mbps down, but only 768 kbps up.  If I allowed my upload usage to get over 700 kpbs, it would have an adverse affect on downloads and connections to much else.  This isn't an Astaro issue, but an internet connection issue.  The fix is to set limits in your torrent client if this is the problem for you.

I don't have watching that. I try this evening and I send an update.

But it's very strange.. The acces to my astaro doesn't depend of my internet connection... So It should be ok ?

- download : 20mbps -> ~2,5Mo/S
- update : 1mpbs -> ~ 125ko/S

When I start download torrent :
- download 1.7Mo/S
- update 10ko/s

It's always works, but I have a lot of time out when I try to resolve a dns host :

How is your DNS setup, both client system (PC) and on the Astaro?  You should have the PC set to look at Astaro for DNS and the Astaro set to use external forwarders.  On the Astaro, if you have checked to use DNS servers from ISP, instead try unchecking that and adding public DNS servers.  Some people like OpenDNS, I personally like the Google public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).  See if that helps.
 
One other thing to check, make certain that your PC NIC is in Duplex mode and not Half Duplex.  Auto Negotiation works much of the time, but not always, especially if you have gigabit on one end and ethernet on the other.

On the PC : 
- dns server 10.11.11.1 for the LAN and 10.12.12.1 for the WIFI -> 10.11.11.1. and 10.12.12.1 is the Astaro IP
On the Astaro :
- DNS forwarder are DNS google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, the TTL value is not check and the the host update is fastest...)

Yesterday, when I have test the issue, I have start the torrent and check DNS from another PC and the PC who have torrent installed. So I don't thing is th PC who has problem.. And I have check the PC NIC and is OK. On Astaro I have force the Link mode (I work a lot with sonicwall and when we have problem, we force that and sometimes it work better... but not in this case)

And I check the maximum connection at the same time.. 781 connections..

But I don't know why I don't see that the last time, but I have 3 times the processor at 99.5% usage... I must test that this evening... [:(]

I tested again now and the CPU usage when I download is at 14.5% maximum... and the problem is the same... can't resolve dns and can't access to my astaro...

Do you have the same issue if you download torrents from a different client machine?

I have exactly the same issue and its been driving me crazy.  
Home user license with a very similar setup.
My SUSE and Vista laptop and PS3 seem to work fine, but not my XP PC that runs uTorrent as soon as I start utorrent I cant brows the internet from that PC, stop utorrent and I internet from a browser works again, other computers are not affected.

With torrent downloading I get a DNS unresolved error. 
? Could this be due to the Home user restriction on the number of PC's? Strange that its not affecting my other PC's?

the issue is..most likely your nic.  If you run a software nic(realtek, marvel some 3coms...any other non broadcom,intel,high end 3com) then the instant a torrent goes your connection is going to go.  The issue lies in the fact a torrent spawns tons of connection attempts..it's not necessarily the successful ones..it's the attempts.  what kind of nic is in that pc that has this issue?  I hit this on my desktop(realtek) but not on my laptop(intel).

I used to have the entire ASL drop because the wan nic as a dlink(aka realtek) garbage nic.  i could dos my entire network off the net because my wan nic was a software nic piece of crap.  Read my sig to see what is in it now..[:)]  It's the celey one.  I can now only dos my desktop off if i let Bt get too aggressive.
