[8.270][NOTABUG][CLOSED] Services restarting

You astaro box got jealous that 8.280 was out and you hadn't updated yet[:D] Get with the program Bob[;)] On the other hand, database is bad in 8.280 so better wait for 8.281.

There were 12 more messages on email when I got to the office, ending at 10:20. I was unable to login, so I restarted at the console.  No beeps have happened after 20 minutes. Top shows 80% CPU & 90-100% Memory & 10% swap.

Beginning a little over 9 hours ago, I got the first of 42 messages:

12:28 Middleware not running - restarted....
After that my laptop could not connect via any VPN, nor could I get answers to ping.  The same was true with my iPhone via the cellular network.

Middleware restart usually starts all the other services so the rest is normal but why did middleware restart. Did you find any hints in middleware log or middleware debug log or even confdaemon logs??

 Top shows 80% CPU & 90-100% Memory & 10% swap.

Is mdw or confd  using the most cpu or is it something else?

Except that 3 of the four subsequent restarts of other services were between 2 and 31 minutes later.

It was neither.  There was a bunch of stuff with from 6 to 9%.

I resolved the issue by booting with a USB stick in place to restore the backup from Wednesday the 16th.  After that, I was able to get into WebAdmin and restored from the 17th.  It seems to be OK again, for now.

Since I had a similar issue with 8.202, I really do think there's a bug here somewhere.  That system has run perfectly with 7.5xx, 7.4xx and 7.3xx; and, it ran perfectly when I swapped the 7.511 drive back in when 8.202 choked.

When this happens, the only access is from the console, so if one of the devs wants me to check anything specific, I'll need instructions now to be prepared.  If someone wants to look at logfiles or have me mail specific ones, my email is my member name here @ my domain listed in my signature.

Additional update:  I Up2Dated to 8.281, and the problem has reappeared - no 5 beeps, no internet connection, no access to WebAdmin.

I again restored the backup from Wednesday the 16th. After that, I was able to get into WebAdmin and again restored from the 17th.  It seems to be OK again, for now.

Hi Bob,
you have my sympathy, since upgrading to 8.270 I had been receiving intermittent restart messages from various proxies. Of course it got worse after the 8.280 upgrade, even a restart didn't reduce the message flow, not as large as yours though.

Another restart in the hope of fixing the pop3 stopped most of the messages and finally the 8.281 fix appears to have stopped the remaining error messages.

Thanks, Ian.  Since restoring a backup solved my problem, I've now had the same problem three times in 8.2xx and had no such problems before, I'm convinced there's a bug.

In the last 24 hours, we see the new-with-8.2 sawtooth pattern in the CPU graph, followed by the 100% CPU usage.  Usage was 6.3% at 00:15 this morning, and climbing to 100% 15 minutes later.
