What are "half" releases (x.5.x) compared to "regular" releases (x.0.x)?

I'm just trying to get clarification on what constitutes a "full" number increase (v18 to v19, for example), versus a "half" increase (v19.0 to v19.5, for example). Trying to decide if we should be going forward with v19.0.x vs. v19.5.x. Is it just minor additional features? It seems like the "full" releases get patches faster (v19.0.1 came out in July, whereas v19.5.1 came out in September.) But if these versions don't actually reflect parity, then it's a moot point.

  • Hello ,

Thank you for reaching out to the community, there are different release, one is global, maintenance and then EAP [Early Access Programs]

Early access programs let you try out new product features before we release them to all customers.

You can take part in more than one program at the same time.
There are two types of early access program:

    • Open. Anyone can take part.
    • Invitation only. We invite you to take part in the program and send you the code you need for access.
    • As the product features are in development, they are subject to change.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • From what I've seen in the last years using Sophos FW: it does not matter. I cannot say, xx.5 releases have more or new features compared to maintenance releases MRx or "full" xx.0 versions.

I was wondering why 19.5 is EAP when 19.0 has not been launched long ago.

Perhaps it promises more progress so is related to marketing rather than technical reasons.

  • There's no difference between the .0 & .5 releases. Both are feature releases, and they are supported in the same way (i.e. Maintenance Releases for them have the same priority).

Note: v19.5 is currently in EAP, and not GA released yet, so MR1 for it (19.5.1) doesn't exist yet.

  • Ah, I must have mis-looked at it. You're right, we're not up to v19.5.1 yet.

  • Sorry, I must have mis-looked at it. You're right, the newest EAP is v19.5, not v19.5.1. Does this mean that v19.5 will take the place of v19.0.2? I've been waiting on a supposed bug fix for v19.0.1 (IPSec hardware acceleration, NC-101716), and the last I heard it was to be fixed in v19.0.2.

  • +1. Though I'd add that I get the vague impression that they may be doing a Tick Tock (as in Intel, not the online service) kind of release: the X.0 release is more user-visible and the X.5 release is more under-the-hood features. So 19.0 gets the Search feature and Quality-based SD-WAN, while 19.5 gets the ability to do failovers over SD-WAN (or something like that). As you say, both are feature releases, maybe just a different emphasis.

Also, maybe expansions, so 19.0 gets XStream processing for IPSec, and 19.5 extends that to some high-end models and features. Etc.

  • Our policy is we support the last 2 major versions, so when v19.5 gets released after EAP, v19.0 will still be supported and MR2 for it will still be released.
