XG Firewall Home Edition constantly rebooting

I'm a new user of XG Firewall Home Edition.

  • I've successfully downloaded and  installed v18.0.1.396
  • I've then configured the LAN adaptor settings.
  • Set a new a new admin password
  • The box successfully connects to the internet via the WAN port
  • It then does a mandatory update to v18.0.5.586, and reboots sucessfully.
  • Set a firewall name and timezone ok

I've received a serial number from Sophos, however when I enter the serial number, the device immediately reboots, and then proceeds to reboot again and again forever - each time it gets to the point where it asks for a password on the console.

I've tried selecting the earlier version 18.0.1.396 from the boot menu - but still still reboots immediately it gets to the password prompt.

The only option left is to install from scratch again - but i've done it twice now with the same result.  What am I doing wrong?

Curious about how you configured the LAN adaptor settings.  I tried upgrading to v18 on my Home setup and the LAN cards were not recognized (or were not functional) after the upgrade.  I reinstalled v17 and they worked fine.  Would love to upgrade to v18 but am afraid of breaking my system again.'

  • Hi Rick,

what are the LAN cards? You might find the order changes with the upgrade.

  • Since it is a PC build (Home edition), the LAN cards simply plug into the motherboard.  I tried switching the LAN and WAN cables thinking that the cards may have switched roles during the upgrade.  Neither worked and I seem to remember that the lights on the LAN cards did not light up.

  • The onboard NIC is a Realtek but no model number, what are the others.

Maybe the drivers were dropped during the upgrade build?

  • The motherboard is: Gigabyte GA-B250M-D3H LGA 1151 Intel H270

    LAN cards:  Intel EXPI9301CTBLK 10/ 100/ 1000 Mbps PCI-Express Network Adapter 1 x RJ4

Losing the Intel drivers makes a lot of sense.  Not sure how to remedy or test that.

  • Sorry, my answer was based on the mb in the first post in this thread.

Update :- the onboard Intel chip looks to be a supported version and the other one also looks okay. When you use the console eg keyboard and display connected to the XG what does the network settings show?

I need a new keyboard but cannot go shopping until the latest lockdown is lifted.
