XG Firewall Home Edition constantly rebooting

I'm a new user of XG Firewall Home Edition.

  • I've successfully downloaded and  installed v18.0.1.396
  • I've then configured the LAN adaptor settings.
  • Set a new a new admin password
  • The box successfully connects to the internet via the WAN port
  • It then does a mandatory update to v18.0.5.586, and reboots sucessfully.
  • Set a firewall name and timezone ok

I've received a serial number from Sophos, however when I enter the serial number, the device immediately reboots, and then proceeds to reboot again and again forever - each time it gets to the point where it asks for a password on the console.

I've tried selecting the earlier version 18.0.1.396 from the boot menu - but still still reboots immediately it gets to the password prompt.

The only option left is to install from scratch again - but i've done it twice now with the same result.  What am I doing wrong?

  • If it is a software issue, I would try starting from an 18.0.4 ISO not 18.0.1. That is the latest ISO you can download (if you have just done this, I don't understand how you've got 18.0.1). Login to your Sophos account to get it. Although it is being upgraded to 18.0.5, part of the is a config migration and maybe there is something in the 18.0.1 default config that it doesn't like. Also you can skip the immediate upgrade to 18.0.5 by deselecting the option when installing. I would leave the upgrade to 18.0.5 until you have registered and then see what happens.

I agree this sounds like a software issue but I recently had an issue with frequent reboots (including when registering) that turned out to be a hardware problem (faulty power supply).

  • Thanks for the suggestions - I now have it working - hope this information might help someone else...

I didn't know an 18.0.4 ISO was available, since when you sign up it downloads 18.0.1 for some reason.  I managed to find the 18.0.4 ISO on the Sophos account - although it took a bit of finding!

However on my first attempt with 18.0.4 exactly the same happened (without it upgrading to 18.0.5 - since from 18.0.4 the upgrade seems not to be mandatory).  Again, I entered the registration key, and it started forever rebooting.

On my second attempt I decided to try something different, unfortunately I changed 2 things at the same time, so not sure which one solved the problem...  Firstly, I initially selected not to register the product - and decided to only enter the registration key once it was up and running through the Administration->Licencing menu.  Secondly, in the process of trying to download 18.0.4, i manged to re-register, and therefore had received another serial number by email.  I decided to try this one instead.

One of these two things seems to have solved the problem - but not sure which one - i'm reluctant to wipe it to discover which one resolved this issue, in case i struggle to get it working again.

Oddly now it doesn't seem to want to upgrade to 18.0.5 - on the Backup and Firmware menu pressing 'check for new firmware' reports that there are no upgrades available.  Hopefully this will resolve itself in due course.
