So did something just change on the application control front? All the google stuff started to be blocked

Just making sure i'm not going mad..... with the exception of our IT admins, all the google apps just started to get blocked (Which was fun considering we're a Google site).

Traced it to application control and had to create a new rule to all the Google stuffs........ what's changed?

  • You are not loosing your mind... showed up to work today... NO EMAIL (Google G Suite).   Jumped on here to see if others were having issues.   And yes, it was "Application Control" that was doing the blocking.  My fix was also creating a new rule to OK Google services.

BUT... I am finding that this is not just a "Google" issue... we also noticed it on Facebook, Pinterest, Fox News, Amazon and many more sites/applications are being blocked out of nowhere... (NEVER previously blocked)

What is really odd.... if you go under "Application Filter" tab and search for the "BLOCKED" application in the list of applications blocked, it (example google mail) does not show in the list of blocked applications, yet still needs a "new rule" in able to get it to work.

It is almost as if the "Application Filter" got a new set of rules overnight, and randomly is blocking sites.

    FYI: running SFOS 16.05.9 MR-9

  • We have the same problem. Starting with the 5/22 update, under the same Sophos rules, we could have used services like gmail, youtube, yahoo, google drive, etc., but became unusable after the 5/22 update. See Sophos Log, found to be blocked by the application filter.

    FYI running on

    CR200iNG (SFOS 16.05.8 MR-8)
  • Same issue here. We use google apps for business and gmail, youtube etc.. all blocked. I believe most of you had application filter set to block cat 4 and 5 applications? I was on the phone with Sophos support and they weren't aware of any reported issues since the pattern update. However, they have taken my logs for further troubleshoot. It seems that the pattern update IPS and Application signatures 3.14.82 - 00:55:00, May 23 2018 caused the issue.

What we have done is to change the application filter to block cat 5 applications for now. At least that way it is still doing some scanning, otherwise way too many exceptions to add. Hopefully Sophos will push an updte to resolve this issue.

Also noticed that RED devices and access points blocked access to micro-apps, all our wireless guests were unable to use apps or browse websites.

    Cheers.

  • Me too!

I thought I was going mental looking at the Application policy and seeing allows for these sites but they are still being filtered argh.

Any updates from Sophos on the issue?

    Cheers,

    Ben

  • Similar problem here as well, it appears to have started this morning.

We have a firewall rule which has both a Web Policy set and an Application Control policy, anyone matching this firewall rule has problems described above. What we found was that we can't have both a Web Policy and and Application Control policy enabled at the same time otherwise we see those sites being blocked. If we set one of them to 'None', either Web Policy or Application Control then the sites start working as normal.

Very strange, hopefully Sophos get it sorted soon.

  •     has there been any such incident reported to any of the Sophos support center?

  • I was on the phone to Sophos Support for an hour this morning and it was due to an update that was released this morning or last night. When I last spoke to Sophos an hour ago, they were working on a fix which they hope to have by this evening.

  • Same issue here. Spent a few hours creating new rules as a work around. Running on 17.0.8 MR8. Another "quality" release from the Sophos team. After 2 years of these ongoing problems, we are done with Sophos when the renewals come up.
