Changed Account's Password Now SEC doesn't open

Hello,

Account's password was changed (this is the same account used to install SEC 4x). Now SEC 5.0 (upgraded a couple of months ago) doesn't work.

How to tell SEC 5.0 to use the new account's password.

  • I guess it is DB connection that fails. I found How to change the password but it is for SUM

  • Hi,

If it's SEC 5, you should just be able to re-run setup.exe, this will perform a modify and fix it up.

    C:\sec_50\ServerInstaller\setup.exe

I would suggest creating dedicated account for the 2 accounts as per:

  • Thx for quick reply.

    Does it affect DB?

What if I run sec_51 instead?

  • Hi,

You should run the setup.exe of the version that is currently installed.

    SEC 5.0:

    C:\sec_50\ServerInstaller\Setup.exe

    SEC 5.1:

    C:\sec_51\ServerInstaller\Setup.exe

If you are running SEC 5.x, you can view the version of the individual components in "Add or Remove Programs"/"Programs and Features".  If you install everything on the same machine you would have:

    1. Sophos Management Database
    2. Sophos Management Server
    3. Sophos Management Console

So when you re-run setup.exe, at the "component" page it will tick all the components that already installed and go into a modify workflow.  You can confirm the workflow in the bootstrap log created by setup.exe.  In SEC 5,0, this is in %temp%, for SEC 5.1 it is in: "\programdata\sophos\Management Instaler\"

So if the "Database" component is already installed and already ticked, the modify it will not touch the existing databases.  The only time it would drop and re-create the database is if the database component wasn't installed but you had manually created the databases from the batch files.  The installer in this case wouldn't know about them.

  • seem it is working now.

If I run C:\sec_51\ServerInstaller\Setup.exe, this should upgrade my sec5.0 right? keeping everything DB? I asked cuz I don't see any "upgrade" option and it says only "Installing..."

  • Hi,

If the "modify" fixed up your SEC 5.0, you should now be able to run the 5.1 setup.exe to upgrade it to SEC 5.1.

In the case of an upgrade, at the end of the setup.exe "wizard" the button will say "Upgrade".  As the information is collected by setup.exe, you haven't changed anything until you click "Upgrade", so you can safely go to the end of the installer without changing anything.

You will notice in the bootstrap log of SEC 5.1 ("\programdata\sophos\Management Installer\") that the workflow will say "Upgrade".

The upgrade workflow, should not ask you for the "database" details, if it does show the database page, do not continue with the upgrade, it suggests there are missing registry keys that should be corrected before attempting the upgrade.  Reply back here if that is the case :).

    Good luck!
