Renaming a server with Sophos Enterprise Console installed

Hello,

I made a mistake and installed version 5.2.2 of the Sophos Enterprise Console onto a server before setting the hostname for the server the way I originally intended.  I've already pushed out the protection software onto all my endpoints and am wondering if there is any way I can fix this without having to uninstall everything.  Everything including the Enterprise Console, Update Manager and SQL express database resides on the same server.

  • That's quite a bit to unpick.  Here are the key questions:

Is it a member of a domain?

Does the computer have a static or dynamic IP?  This question is quite important, as it determines how all the clients reference the management server for communication.  You can see the results by looking in the ParentAddress reg key (under the \software\sophos\messaging system\router) of a managed client.

The accounts that you specified for the database and updating accounts when oyu ran setup.exe, are these domain or local?

    Any remote consoles?

Is it just a single Sophos Update Manager (SUM) on this computer and is it just creating local CIDs that all the clients point to?

Is the database just the local default SQL SOPHOS instance.

If this is a virtual computer, I guess you could spin up another with the correct name and follow the migration guide.

  • Hello jjosef,

setting the hostname for the server the way I originally intended

    what's in a name? :smileyhappy:

There is no simple way to rename the management server. Actually the uninstall is pretty straightforward and doesn't take overly long - I'd say everything else is the bigger part. In any case you'd have to run another install and reprotect the endpoints.

  • Here is what I found-

Is it a member of a domain?

    Yes

Does the computer have a static or dynamic IP?

    Static IP

Under the ParentAddress reg key- I see entries for the IP address, the server FQDN, and the hostname

The accounts that you specified for the database and updating accounts when oyu ran setup.exe, are these domain or local?

    Domain accounts

    Any remote consoles?

    No

Is it just a single Sophos Update Manager (SUM) on this computer and is it just creating local CIDs that all the clients point to?

Single SUM, not sure about CIDs though

Is the database just the local default SQL SOPHOS instance.

    Local default SQL instance

  • Yes Indeed :) I didn't expect the name to trip me up, but it definitely did.  I haven't decided which avenue to pursue yet, but I should know soon enough.  Thanks!
