Software Distribution question

Should the software distribution, from the distribution tab when view/edit update manager, change to a newly created software subscription?

Just to be clear -

Recommended is the only software subscription there for it is listed as the software distribution.  When I add a second subscription, it replaces Recommended on the distribution tab.  I can click the drop down and select Recommended but it doesn't stick.

Should I be concerned?

  • Hello dluneau,

you've probably a misconception of the Distribution tab. At first I had a hard time understanding what you mean by doesn't stick :smileyhappy:.

So how does it work? After you have added a subscription in the left-hand Software Subscriptions pane it is available for subscription by the individual SUMs. You then View/Edit Configuration and find the new subscription on the left side under Available. You select this subscription for the SUM to maintain. All subscriptions under Subscribed to are distributed to the default  \\server\SophosUpdate share. For each subscription you can optionally add additional shares.

For this you select on of the Subscribed to subscriptions in the drop-down. It contains the subscription sorted by name and whenever you open View/Edit Configuration and go to the Distribution tab the alphabetically first is displayed - this is why Recommended doesn't stick. In other words - the Distribution tab shows the shares for one of the subscriptions at a time, initially the alphabetically first. You can view the shares for one of the other subscriptions by selecting it from the drop-down.

If this is not clear just rename your new subscription to, say, Z-subscription and check the Distribution tab. To get a better idea what Distribution does add a share with the Add... button (in the Browse For Folder pop-up just type \\NOW\here in the Folder: field and wait, eventually you'll get an alert The share "\\NOW\here" may not exist .... Click Yes and it will appear in the Available: pane. Select it and move it to the Update to: pane. Now select the other subscription from the drop-down. Clear now?

  • Your explanation is crystal clear.

Regarding to software subscription, what are your thoughts on upgrading macs to v9?  Change the version on Recommended (for macs) to 9 Recommended or create a new software subscription to reflect 9 Recommended.

    Thank you,

  • Hello dluneau,

v9 requires at least Mac OS X 10.6 and while some of our users have successfully installed 8.0.x on 10.9 it is supported only with v9 (IIRC "fully" with 9.0.5).

A second subscription gives you the option to quickly "switch" versions for the endpoint (v9 adds Web Protection and has architectural changes so there might still be issues with certain configurations) but if your Windows and Mac clients share the same policies requires extra space for the Windows software (and, depending on your group structure, might be a pain to administer the update policies).

  • I could be missing something but 9 Recommend says it is good for OS 10.4 +.  I added a new subscription, created a new group and updating policy to reflect the version 9 Recommended for macs but some of them are not updating and the ones that do, I have to kick off from the client.

  • Hello dluneau,

10.5 and older definitely can't upgrade to v9 (unless something has changed in the last few weeks after I have tested). The SA installers downloads page lists 10.6+. The product tag is misleading - the product does cover 10.4-10.9 although for 10.4 and 10.5 only by its version 8. You should find one or two recent threads about it in this board.
