Software Distribution question

Should the software distribution, from the distribution tab when view/edit update manager, change to a newly created software subscription?

Just to be clear -

Recommended is the only software subscription there for it is listed as the software distribution.  When I add a second subscription, it replaces Recommended on the distribution tab.  I can click the drop down and select Recommended but it doesn't stick.

Should I be concerned?

  • Hello dluneau,

you've probably a misconception of the Distribution tab. At first I had a hard time understanding what you mean by doesn't stick :smileyhappy:.

So how does it work? After you have added a subscription in the left-hand Software Subscriptions pane it is available for subscription by the individual SUMs. You then View/Edit Configuration and find the new subscription on the left side under Available. You select this subscription for the SUM to maintain. All subscriptions under Subscribed to are distributed to the default  \\server\SophosUpdate share. For each subscription you can optionally add additional shares.

For this you select on of the Subscribed to subscriptions in the drop-down. It contains the subscription sorted by name and whenever you open View/Edit Configuration and go to the Distribution tab the alphabetically first is displayed - this is why Recommended doesn't stick. In other words - the Distribution tab shows the shares for one of the subscriptions at a time, initially the alphabetically first. You can view the shares for one of the other subscriptions by selecting it from the drop-down.

If this is not clear just rename your new subscription to, say, Z-subscription and check the Distribution tab. To get a better idea what Distribution does add a share with the Add... button (in the Browse For Folder pop-up just type \\NOW\here in the Folder: field and wait, eventually you'll get an alert The share "\\NOW\here" may not exist .... Click Yes and it will appear in the Available: pane. Select it and move it to the Update to: pane. Now select the other subscription from the drop-down. Clear now?
