Firefox 7.0.1

Greetings all,

I have recently formatted and installed Win7 x64.  I have found that while using Sophos Enpoint Security 9.7 (along with Sohpos firewall), that certain sites on Firefox 7.0.1 cause the entire browser (ie. all open tabs) to "freeze" and not load.  I can open a new tab but it will not let me load any pages - this means that I have to keep restarting the browser.  It seems to be certain sites in particluar that cause this problem - one such example is a link on my ISP homepage.

This problem does not occur on Internet Explorer 8.  I tried uninstalling Sophos and Firefox then ran as per normal.

Can anyone provide an insight into what might be causing this?

I did search the Sophos forums but found only other Firefox related problems.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have the same problem. In firefox 7 with AdBlock Enabled and Sophos  Web Protection ( 9.7 ) enabled it freezes and stop loading pages. Turning off Sophos Web Protection or Turning Off AdBlock makes Firefox work.

  • This problem has been driving me insane recently - I never thought it would be Sophos.  I've tried a number of things including disabling every add-on and resetting my profile, but could never pin down the cause of the problem.  Annoyingly, I started noticing this issue at around the same time Firefox 7.0 was released, so just assumed it was a dodgy update.

Ah well, thanks for posting your message anyway.  I'll give you kudos simply due to the amount of hair I've avoided pulling out over this one!  Oddly enough, I've not heard any of our users mention this issue...

  • Greetings:

I have just setup a new SAV 9.7 server. On my test machines, FireFox 7.0.1 has exactly the same issues as describe. I cannot put new SAV into production in my schools -- they are using a mixture of FF and IE -- A troubleshooting nightmare.

Please advise when issue is resolved. Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Larry,

such issues are sometimes of rather general nature but sometimes more specific (i.e. they depend on certain circumstances - even installing an add-on on a fresh install might produce different results from having the add-on already installed before upgrading). Thus it might not be easy to reproduce them in a lab without knowing the details. Therefore it is often helpful (to "both" sides and "third parties" as well) to actively contact Support and supply them with some information instead of just waiting for the issue to be resolved.

    Thanks

  • Greetings:

Ok. More information: I am now also having issues accessing our internal web-based student records system (Genesis, by Edupoint Education Systems). This system is hosted on an internal HP Blade platform, running Windows Server 2003 R2. On the machine that I have loaded Sophos ESC 9.7 on, I cannot load Genesis at all under FireFox (pretty little circle just keeps spinning) and with limited operability under IE 9. I use this system daily, and did not have any issues before installing ESC 9.7. No one else in the district has reported any issues, albeit, they have not been fed the new version of Sophos.

Cannot afford to put this Sophos version into production environment. We live and die on student information.

    Thank you again.

  • Hello Larry,

it's infeasible for a vendor to test these things at their labs. For the issues accessing Genesis you'd have to contact Support directly, guess they'll be happy to work with you to resolve these problems. For publicly accessible sites you have problems with please post some examples. Guess one or the other forum user would be interested to test them.

  • Greetings:

    Chapter three:

Completely un-installed ESC 9.7 from testing machine, and voila! Everything works again!

FireFox is fully functional at all websites, internal and external. I cannot possibly put this flawed and expensive product version into production environment.

Looking into other options for AV. Not real happy with Sophos and the "support" model provided. Not recommending Sophos to anyone that is dependent upon web-based products and services.

  • Hello Larry,

can't imagine that you are deliberately misunderstanding me so I probably haven't been clear.
    1) As customer you are entitled to support by phone or mail (first level, not a call center) - I've provided the link for your convenience
    2) If you don't have a direct license but through your district it's either 1) or support is through the licencee
    3) This forum is an additional channel and user to user help but not the primary way to raise a product defect
    4) I'm not Sophos, just trying to help

Lastly, the meaning of "web-based products and services is not clear to me"

  • setting network.http.max-connections to 32 ( or 64 ) solves a problem.

default value for this parameter is 256 and it kill Sophos.

to reconfigure this go to about:config url in your firefox7

  • Hello Robert_SI,

do you have an example of a publicly accessible site where it fails with these settings? Which filters do you use for Adblock? I'm asking 'cause I do not have issues (XP SP3 and Win7 64bit, Firefox 7.0.1 with default max-connections, Adblock)
