Uninstall from Mac

I know I've seen this come up hundreds of times, but no matter what I try, I can't seem to get rid of all traces of the program. All I want to do is get the old version of Sophos off my mac so I can get the new one installed on my system.

I've deleted the file from my Apps using the trash can. I've gone into my Library>App Support>Sophos folder and found no uninstall program, so I deleted the folder. I can't reinstall the program to try and get the uninstall because I got it from a CD at my college, which I graduated from already. I've looked through every folder I have to find any traces of the name and haven't found anything. I've gone to my Acitivity Monitor and made sure Sophos had quit on there. I've removed the little icon from my menu bar at the top as well as the large icon on the bottom of the screen.

I've completely run out of options. All I want to do is protect my computer. Is there some kind of uninstall program? Or could someone just send me the uninstall package. There has got to be something to do to get rid of this program.

  • The best way to uninstall is to use the installer (reinstall and then uninstall) - I feel you know this from your posting.  Therefore you need to get hold of the installer and this seems to be the problem, having graduated and no longer have access to the original CD.

Have you tried our free version of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac?  It's a fully featured product and available to dowload here: Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

Support is via a different forum though:  Sophos FreeTalk.  There are a lot more Mac experts on that forum.

After trying the product if you still want to uninstall it and are having problems I recommend posting on Sophos FreeTalk for the best answer.

  • That new edition is actually what I was trying to install, but no matter how hard I try, it won't let me do so. I keep getting a message saying "There is an older version of Sophos on this computer that is not compatable with to the update" or something very similar.

I'm trying to get ahold of my old school to see if they would be willing to lend me a copy to fix this by reinstalling and uninstalling that way. I used to work with the computer services on campus, so I figured it would be worth a shot.

  • Hey sachiela,

Is sophos the AV for MAC? All this while, I think MAC does not need an AV because it is quite safe.. after reading a few threads here, i feel MAC is vulnerable too .. please let me know your thought.. log splitter reviews

  • same issue I was having, I deleted using trash can but cant reinstal the program. Even tried getting the program from my friend. I think you can get the unistall package off the disk but for some reason its still wont work for me.

  • Agree 100% with Sachiela - exactly the same problem.   You sophos guys just keep saying, 'just install the free version'.  But you cannot do this while any trace of the old files remain.  Problem is, there seems to be nothing else to 'trash'.  I find this situation more than a bit ridiculous...surely someone from Sophos can give a step-by-step guide as to how to uninstall the thing and re-install the new version!!!!!

  • I looked here because I had exactly the same situation. Then I realised that if the remover is part of the installer, I might be able to open it.... This was right: Control click on the installer package and go Show Package Contents, then look in Resources folder and double-click on the Remove Sophos pkg. This will unistall it and allow the installation of the new version.

  • Hi, I am having real trouble completely removing Sophos from my mac, and it is exactly the same problem. I was required to have it installed in order to access the network at my university from which I have now graduated, and I would now like to remove it as it is not running properly, and I have noticed it is constantly running in my utility folder, from the root user which no matter how hard I try, I cannot stop it. I really do not want this old version on my mac anymore, but it just won't go away! I have looked everywhere possible for an installer/uninstaller, but it appears that this does not exist on my computer, and so there is no way of completely removing the program, please help! this is really bothering me, and all I want to do is completely remove the old and very clumsey program and then use the great new one. please let me know how you guys have solved this problem.

    Cheers.

  • Hi Sachiela,

If I understand your post correctly  "I've gone into my Library>App Support>Sophos folder and found no uninstall program"

you are talking about the folder  /Users/<your username>/Library  which is not the correct location.  It should be the Library folder in the root of the hard drive that you are looking in  i.e  /Library/

There are two possible locations for the uninstall program depending upon which version of SAV was previously installed.

The very old one (SAV 4) was located in /Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus/  and  the current enterprise version (SAV 7) has the uninstaller in  /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/.

You can also fool the home edition installer by trashing just /Applications/Sophos Anti-Virus.app and one the Sophos Anti-Virus folders mentioned above, but this should be considered only as a last resort since it does not remove everything cleanly, and is merely a workaround.

    I hope this helps
