Please help! Why is Sophos freezing my brothers computer when it is being uninstalled?

Hi,

I downloaded Sophos onto my brothers computer, and ever since it is causing it to freeze. Because of this, we bave decided to uninstall it, but it isn't allowing us to do so, as it is freezing during this process. it is a brand new laptop, running windows 7. please help!!!!!

HI,

For it to be that bad, is there another AV product on the machine, that could bring a machine to its knees?

Can you disable the on-access scanner on the machine or are you unable to launch the interface of SAV to do so?

If not, are you able to run in the run box or a command prompt:
net stop savservice

to stop the sav service?

Does that help? That might at least enable you to investigate.

I have resorted to disk recovery, to wipe the whole thing. is this a good idea? how long will it take?

Sounds a bit extreme.

Can you try booting into safe mode with command prompt (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/#windows7 ). From the command prompt run:

Services,msc

Then disable the 'Sophos Antivirus' service under the properties of it. Then boot into normal mode. Does that behave better?
