installing second remote console but having problems

Hello,

I'm tryiing to install the remote console at a collegue's pc, but he gets the following error message: The system must be restarted before installing this product to allow prior file update operations...

But after a reboot the same message reappears. What could be the problem? I already looked at the registry but the key mentioned isn't there.

Hello Jo,
take a look at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\\PendingFileRenameOperations. If it's not empty the installer will not proceed.

I already looked in the regsitry but the key PendingFileRenameoperations isn't there.

thought you don't need us any longer :smileywink:.
Might be that there is a more detailed log created at this point in one of the usual places. There might also be a "lock" (zero byte) file in system %TEMP% directory like SophosRebootTest.txt (perhaps with a different name). Did it install any pre-reqs?

Locating the "lock" file in \Windows\Temp should be fairly easy (if it exists). Install logs are usually in the system's or the user's temp directory or, since SEC 5.1, in %ProgramData%. The results of the pre-install check are written to a file - but I can't say right now how detailed it is or if there's a more detailed log in the same folder. BTW: which Windows and SEC version (so I can dig in the right place)? Christian

HI,
I'd be suprised if it was something other than the PendingFileRenameOperations entry under the key.
Do you have the bootrapper log to post?
You could probably runn Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx), filtered by setup.exe. As the message comes up quite quick there wouldn't be much to check through and match up with the time of the error in bootrapper log.

the installing user's %TEMP% directory or %ProgramData%\Sophos\Management Installer.

we looked for *bootstrap* but it didn't show any regarding the management. I guess it even doesn't start the installation properly. What do you guys/girls think?

if you start the installer - does it present the message "immediately" or do you get selection screens (components, server/user details)?
