Retiring NON-AD devices from Console

Hi,

We have an ever increasing number of devices in our console that are no longer active due to replacement or failure. Does anyone know if there is a way of having the Enterprise Console work to a cut off date of last contact and delete the device?

We don't use Active Directory so can't re-sync and I don't fancy trawling the console for dead devices!!

Neil.

  • As far as I'm aware, the answer to your question is "no".  However, instead of trawling through the console looking for old devices, you can just ensure you're viewing all machines (not just the connected or managed ones), then click on the "Up to Date" colum to sort by the last update time.  Simply select the range you want to delete (for example, not updated in the last 60 days) and they'll be gone.

If you do accidentally delete a machine that's still active, it'll add itself back to the console the next time it updates.

  • Hello Neil,

please take a look at Using PurgeDB with Enterprise Console 4.x and Sophos Control Center 4 (also, searching for PurgeDB in this forum will turn up some threads/posts which might be of help).

  • Ah, now that is useful.  Thanks QC, I now stand corrected!

  • If a computer was removed from the EC and later came back online, you mention it will readd to it. Will it readd to the Unassigned folder?

We decided with moving to EC5 SEPP 10, to do away with AD syncing and build a folder structure that is cleaner than syncing the hundreds of OU's we have for workstations that would all have the same policies.

  • If a computer is deleted from the console (as opposed deleted/purged from the database) it is only marked as deleted. It is neither displayed nor considered for management but it exists with all its associations: group it belonged to, history, alerts and so on. When it contacts the console again it will reappear in its original group - but if this group no longer exists it ends up in Unassigned.
If it was deleted from the database it will reincarnate in Unassigned.
