Restart needed for XP machines

All of our XP machines are showing the error "restart needed for update to take effect" . Did I miss a notice?

  • Hello leftout,

which version was on the endpoints and which one is on them now? According to the Calendar of release dates for forthcoming versions of Sophos Anti-Virus and the Advisory: Sophos Endpoint Security and Control version 10.3.7 the next version is still more than two weeks away (and the latter doesn't mention a restart).

  • The XP based machines requesting restarts are version 10.3.1 VDL4.98G. I found an XP machine that has been off line since 3-7-14 that is version 10.0.11. Does that help?

  • This is what I know at this point:

Our Sophos product license has changed from "Sophos Endpoint Protection- Advanced" to "Endpoint Protection - Advanced" Some product features may have changed. I see my SUM is displaying alert "software is not available"

Below is an explantion of the change. I will contact support to help me sort this out unless someone wants to offer any suggestions of which I will gladly accept.

As part of the Sophos Endpoint Protection 10 release there have been changes to the number of available licenses according to the level of protection required. The following details the information provided and changes required in Enterprise Console when there is a license change that will affect endpoint machines.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
    Enterprise Console 5.0.0

    What will happen

When the license changes, one or more of the following alerts will be displayed against the Computer name in the Update managers view, with the complete message appearing in the Update Manager Details dialog box:

    Software license has changed
80040426 - Sophos product license has changed from '{FromLicense}' to '{ToLicense}'. Some product features may have changed.

    Software is not available.
80040421 - Software subscription 'Recommended' contained version 10.0 Recommended of platform Windows 2000 and above. This version is not available, either because the product has been retired or your license has changed. Your subscription has been automatically updated.

Both alerts will need to be acknowledged. To do this:

    1. Right-click on the Computer name and select Acknowledge Alerts...
    2. Select the alerts to acknowledge
    3. Click on Acknowledge.

  • Hello leftout,

thanks for the details. As the endpoints are upgrading from 10.0 to 10.3 the restart is expected.

What you obviously didn't expect was the removal of 10.0 (and possibly earlier versions) from you license (or, the be exact, the change to a license which doesn't include 10.0). You could complain that you haven't been notified of the license change and resulting automatic update in advance - this might at least help other customers with similar license changes pending.

Guess you don't want to downgrade to 10.0, do you?
