Menu bar icon remains after uninstalling Sophos

I have a late-2012 MacBook Pro running OSX Mavericks (10.9.2) and I tried to uninstall Sophos Antivirus 9 software by dragging the Sophos folder to the trash.  I did not see the Uninstall package in there.  When I read the instructions for removing Sophos I found the Remove Sophos package in Applications under R (looked under U) and ran it, and it indicated that the uninstall was successful but the icon is still there.  I’’’’ve tried searching for anything to do with Sophos and removing it from my hard drive.  For another issue I had to do a Safe Boot and then reinstall the system software, but the Sophos icon is still there!  Out, **bleep** spot!  Anyone know how?

  • You should be able to remove it simply by holding down the Cmd key and dragging it off.

If you mean the icon in the Menu bar, when you click on the icon does it give you the pull-down menu (and do any of the menu items work) or does it just sit there, inert?

  • Hi,

me too, I've unistalled the SAV from my Mavericks (was shown it was successful), but the icon is still in the menu bar and when I click on it it does show the pull-down menu, and the SAV has updated itself after I removed it.

I've already removed all SAV folders from my programs and have tried to find the "uninstall package" in my HD Library - I don't have this folder. When I try to reinstall the program to see if I can remove it safely again, I can't even reinstall it, as it shows "installation failed, please remove Sophos Antivirus Soffware".

I would appreciate any help in finding the solution for my problem. Thanks in advance.

  • Being just a user like you, I'm winging it here, but look in /Library/Caches/com.sophos.sau/CID. In that folder is Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition.app, which looks suspiciously like the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.app that gets installed in the Applications folder when Sophos AV version 9 is installed. If nobody else steps in here to correct or confirm this, and at your own risk, you might try running that to see if it will uninstall the bits and pieces of Sophos you still have.

  • You could get EasyFind, or FindAnyFile (to run as root, hold Option>Find). Then enter "Sophos" and see what it comes up with. For some system items, you will not be able to move to trash directly, but must choose reveal in finder, then select move to trash and authenticate with your admin password.

With EasyFind, set settings to scan all files, ignore case, invisible files, files and folders, all words. You should probably be able to pick up bits and pieces that way.

I highly recommend EasyFind also. That's what I used to find what appears to be the uninstaller I mentioned.

  • Thanks everyone for your help! Easy Find really solved the problem. I had more than 30 bits and pieces of "sophos" left, so I just removed them all and everything is perfect now :-)

  • And stil it stubbornly remains...

I used Remove Sophos and it said it was successfull but the package was still running after a reboot and the icon was still in the menu bar. I used Easyfind as suggested and deleted everything that it found but the icon stubbornly stays in the menu bar. The drop down menu from the icon is still there but none of the functions appear to do anything. Activity monitor shows the following even after a reboot: (the *** replace my name)

    SophosUIServer 9.5 MB 6 136 311 ************ 0.1 2.00 0 bytes 0 bytes 32 Bit - No 0 bytes 0 bytes 0 bytes No No 0 bytes 0 bytes 0 0 0 bytes

Any suggestions wpould be welcome. Thanks

  • I used Findanyfile and found additional files I have been able to delete most of them but there are still some Sophos files located in the private/root directory which I can't open because I don't have permissison to see its contents.
