Loss of speed on the internet connection after upgrading to version 9

Since I upgraded to v9 of Sophos for my Macbook Pro, I have noticed a tremendous loss of speed on the internet connection.  Ran a speed test just now and my download speed is only 5.27 of 20 mbps.  This only began occurring once I installed the upgraded version 9 after sophos quit scanning.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Nancy

  • Is it a particular browser (like just Safari)?  If you disable the network protection related options for v9 does the speed return (example shown below)?  If disabling the options does cause the speed to increase, can you disable them one at a time and try and narrow down the feature causing the slow down.

It seems quite similar to the thread below so have a read of that for options.

Having been through page-loading slowdowns myself after upgrading to Sophos 9 (which, BTW, seem to have improved substantially since v9.0.8), the OP may be experiencing something different too. If his speed test is also showing a definite drop in transfer rate, does option 2 of Web Protection, which blocks malicious downloads, actually scan the file as it's coming down the pipe?

    BTW, that's a really cool video demo.:smileyhappy:

  • I use Google Chrome but tried Safari and slowness the same.  However, I changed the Live Protection and Web Protection as you suggested and it made a tremendous difference in internet speed.  I disabled each option individually and it appears it is the website protection for Block access to malicious websites (the first option under website protection).  With this option off, what are my concerns and how do I protect against this now.  Forgive me if my questions make you laugh since I am not very computer savvy.

    Thanks,

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but as I understand it, Sophos maintains a constantly updated list of malicious websites and when you go to a website, it is first checked in real time against that list. Note that "website" can really mean a whole collection of hidden links which make up the website that you see on the screen and each of them has to be checked too, since a legitimate website can be hacked to connect you to a place you don't want to be. I'd think an alternative way to protect yourself is to disable Java altogether (assuming you have it installed), put limits on what JavaScript can do by installing, in Firefox at least, NoScript, and control cross-site requests with something like Request Policy. Another alternative is patience. I was concerned about the slowdown in earlier versions of Sophos 9 too, but it really has improved, and both the speed of your connection and the activity on the website can amplify the delay. Indeed, if the connection to the website you want is slow, the process of checking each link in it should appear slow too since the cart can't go any faster than the horse.

BTW, nobody is born knowing this stuff, and, as you're seeing, nothing is ever simple.

  • As previously linked, I usually defer to the other thread...

...as a post on there does say that it can be location specific, local DNS can have an impact, and if there were generally known issues more people would be posting this kind of problem.  It's all true and it all means the problem is hard to troubleshoot.

Having said that: If there are a couple of URL addresses that really slow down pls forward these as examples and I can test and see if the problem can be re-created.  Also say how long the delay is when Web Protection is enabled, as well as if the problem is constant or infrequent, to give me some idea of the experience.

Sorry about the problem and if you can post more information I'll see what can be done.
