on access scanner is off

"your mac may not be secure". any suggestions on how to get this to remain on? Offline, I removed program that would not allow me to change the on-access settilng, and opened the file. Then went back online and am updating. What am I missing? thanks.

forgot to add (sorry) that i keep getting a log message of " Sophos Anti-Virus unable to initialise virus detection engine. Still...

Same issue. iMac running 10.7.5. Shield icon is gray. on-access scanner can not be turned on. Retore Defaults offer sno help: "On-access Scanner failed to set preference." I do have a Virtual Machine running Windows7 on my computer VMware Fusion.

Have you tried trashing the Sophos preference plist files? If these become corrupt, they would cause this problem.

I had the same problem. Removed the program and re-downloaded & reinstalled. Seems to be fine now.

Same problem, did the same to no avail. I've tried everything suggested in these forums without any luck. I gave up and uninstalled Sophos completely.

Have the same issue. When I try to restore scnning to default get the message: On-access Scanner failed to set preference
I have deleted the plist in ~/Libary/ApplicationSupport/Sophos AnitVirus/Scans/ with no effect.
Is there another plist to delete?

I've had the same problem. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, and then it was fine…until I updated it. That's when it started both times — when I updated it. As soon as the update is done, the icon goes grey, and then I cannot turn on On-Access Scanning. The button for turning it on is greyed out, and it says "Stop Scanning" anyway.

I am experiencing the same problem, I am unable to activate the access scanner function from my preferences. OS 10.8.2 on a white MacBook.

Much the same as previous poster OS 10.8.2, MacBook Air Successfully updated 05:45:38 (EST) 09 December 2012 Six hours later, the update has resulted in a Fatal Error com.sophos.autoupdate: Update started at 11:46:13 09 December 2012 com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to initialise virus detection engine [0x80040200]
