Sophos AV 7.3.8C Crashed MacBook Pro AGAIN!!! Unacceptable Software!!!

Hi,

I really can't believe it!  The 'Auto Update' process within Sophos AV 7.3.8C has completely locked up my MacBook Pro running 10.7.3 and I had to power the thing off!  This software is utterly rubbish, very poor quality.

Again, Sophos Technical Support don't give a **bleep** about their customers, as I have no previous assistance.

  • I am currently seeing the following error in the Sophos Anti-Virus.log:

Issue: Could not scan /private/tmp/0645a2d1.$$$ com.sophos.intercheck: An unexpected error occurred

  • Interesting.

I run 'Repair Permissions' on the hard disk on a weekly basis... could it be a corrupt install of the product or something introduced with the 10.7.3 update?

  • Could you try increasing the worker threads, by running the following in Terminal

    /Library/Preferences/com.sophos.sav WorkerThreads –int 15

  • Hi Will,

Thanks for having a look at the logs and coming back with this suggestion.  I realise that your doing your best here and I appreciate it ;)

I'm afraid that I'm not really looking for a step-by-step resolution process for this issue, I'm looking for a full understanding of what the issue or issues are.  From what I have seen from the behaviour of the product over the last month, the installation of the product will impact the stability of my system.  I have uninstalled the product as it causes my machine to be un-usable.  I'm afraid that I don't have a test system to try different things on and risk to the data and purchased music that I have on the hard disk, is a little too high.

I am more than happy to provide any additional logs that you require in addition to what the diagonstic tool has collected.  I am also very happy to assist in the development of the future versions of the product

I would be open to installing version 8.0 when the issues are resolved and others are running it.  Or I'll look at the installation of the EndPoint product.

Let me know if you need anything else.

    Kind regards,

    Neil

  • Understood Neil, can I suggest we park this case until opportunity for testing presents itself or the installation of SAV 8 is performed (SAV 8 will automatically increase the worker threads dynamically, SAV 7 doesn't).

  • Hi Will,

Thanks for coming back and understanding.

I would like to invite you to continue investigating this issue using what I've provided and anything else that you may need from my machine.  Continuing the investigation of the logs will probably assist with the development of version 8.0, it also may help with building the knowledgebase for version 7.0.  I'm afraid that I won't really have the capability to test version 7.0, as I've only got a single Mac with a single install.

If version 8.0 is due soon and you can proceed with gaining the knowledge (depending on the life cycle for version 7.0), then lets park this case for the time-being.

As i say, let me know if you need anything further from my OS X install and I'll see about passing this to you.

    Kind regards,

    Neil

  • If I can open this up again, I'm using Sophos 7.3.10 as recommended by our University IT policy.  Whenever I try to scan all files on my mac (MacBookPro 2.66 GHz i7, OS X 10.6.8) the scan finishes through about 80%, judging by the progress bar, and then crashes irretrievably.  The only way to recover from this serious crash is to do a power restart.  I have the "scan inside archives and compressed files" deselected and am excluding the boot camp partition as I've seen recommended in other posts.  Still crashes.

  • apologies for the delay all.

I can confirm that SAV for Mac 8 should be available to all, automatic updates from SAV for Mac 7 to 8.0 will occur from next month.
