Problem with USB port after installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition version 7c

Hey guys. Can anyone help me?

I am unable to read my USB hub/splitter after installing the anti-virus. It will not recognise any thumb drive that I insert int the hub but it is fine if I insert the thumb drive directly into the USB port. The problem did not resolve even after unstalling the anti-virus.

I am a new Mac user. I am using iMac running on Mac OS X 10.7.2.

Really appreciate any help.

Thank you. :smileyhappy:

  • This doesn't really sound like a Sophos issue... I've had this problem with USB splitters on a number of occasions, and I believe Apple even has a KBA on it (which I can't seem to locate).

If I recall correctly, the solution is to turn off your computer, unplug your USB device, *remove all power sources from the computer*, wait 30 seconds, reconnect power sources, then boot the computer with Command-Option-P-R keys held down.  Wait for the funky chimes (yes, more than one of them), and release the keys on the keyboard.  After letting the computer start back up again, plug in your hub/splitter *with nothing connected to it*, and then plug in one device at a time.  Everything *should* work.  Of course, some unpowered splitters (they get all their power from the USB connection) cannot support certain thumb drives as the two devices combined draw too much power from the computer's USB port.  I presume this isn't the case for you, as the unspoken statement is that your thumb drive was working perfectly well in the indicated configuration prior to installing Sophos Anti-Virus.

  • Dear Andrew,

Tried your suggestion. It opened up the Mac Os X Utiity with several options (1) Restore fro Time Machine Backup (2) Reinstall Mac OS X (3) Get Help Online (4) Disk Utility.

I don't know how to proceed.

    Thanks.

  • Your issue is due to timing... with OS X Lion, Apple added a new command... Command-R.  It enters recovery mode, and overrides zapping the PRAM.

However, the PRAM command causes it to be reset right at power-on; the recovery mode doesn't trigger until after all the hardware tests and setup are complete.  So, if you ensure that you hold down the keys soon enough, you should get to the right results.
