Menu Icon Missing

I recently noticed that the menu icon is now missing, even though in the Preferences I have it set show the icon. This change has occurred recently on all four machines in my house / on my network.

Activity Monitor shows that SAV is running and is launched on boot-up, and it is active and not stalled in memory.  So maybe this is just a cosmetic glitch in one of the recent updates... or not.

OSX 10.6.8 on all machines.

Sophos has been great, by the by, as I've run it vs Symantec against some sandboxed viruses and trojans.  It keeps up pretty good... surprisingly so... catching about 99.7% of what the commercial package found. It still has some issues of CPU usage when it is allowed access to networked drives.  Then again, with Sophos on every machine, and switched in each case to local coverage online, scanning networked drives isn't really necessary.

  • I'm having this problem as well, and I've only just installed SAV on Lion. It showed up right after I installed it, and then once I rebooted, the menu icon won't show up no matter what I do.

  • I have the same problem - funnily enough Sophos are claiming on their page that IF you are NOT seing that icon then sophos is NOT running :D

I checked the running processes though and can see that Sophos really IS running:

    MacBook-Pro:~ user007$ ps -ef|grep -i sop

    0    64     1   0 12:10am ??         0:00.27 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosAntiVirus.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosAntiVirus -d

    0    65     1   0 12:10am ??         0:15.55 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/InterCheck.app/Contents/MacOS/InterCheck -d

    0    66     1   0 12:10am ??         0:00.07 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosAutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosAutoUpdate -d

    501   266   258   0 12:23am ttys000    0:00.00 grep -i sop

    MacBook-Pro:~ user007$

It appears that it is automatically started on start and running in daemon mode - so I'm THINKING that all should work fine and in case something dodgy starts happening on your Mac you will see some popup on your toolbar ? Just guessing :)

However still dont quite understand Sophos' claims on their site and what was said to me during the installation :)

  • Got the same issue, just completed a fresh install of OSX Lion 10.7.1 - Installed Sophos - The black shield was there, but on restarting it's gone!!!!

  • I understand that the product is free and the company provides no support, but it would be nice if they would at least acknowledge the issue and clarify whether the product is in fact working when the shield is not visible.

I just installed it on a MacBook running Lion and the Shield was missing as soon as I rebooted.

P.S.  When I disabled scanning insider archives and compressed files (which I would rather be able to do), the Shield reappeared in the menu bar after a reboot.  I'll report back if it disappears again.

  • Thanks; that last bit about archive scanning will be quite useful I'm sure.  Personally, I haven't run into the vanishing menu icon issue.  Which model of MacBook are you using?  The new Lion "About This Mac" -> "More Info" dialog provides very useful details for this :)

  • Im having the same problem. After logging out the icon has dissapeared and wont show again no matter what i do. Im using Lion 10.7.1 on a Macbook.

  • I am also experiencing loss of sophosuiserver (menubar icon) after it tries to update.  I am using 8.06c on freshly installed mountain lion on my 2011 macbook pro 13inch.  Common and release a fix already, this is disgusting.  Also sometimes the on-access scanner get disabled but for unknown reasons.  ALso the uninstalling,  permission repairing, reinstalling does not work!
