Shield not visible

I have just installed Sophos on my mac and even though it says installation is succesfull as soon as I click out of the box with the two step installation process the black shield disappears.  Not sure why??  Do I need to untick something?

    Hi Marilyn,

    If you open the Sophos Anti-Virus application from your Applications menu and look under "Sophos Anti-Virus -> Preferences", the Messaging tab has a checkbox to "Show Sophos Anti-Virus in the menu bar". If this checkbox is enabled, the menu bar item should be displayed. If it's enabled and it's not showing, could you post the version of OS X you are using?

    I have the same problem. The check box is ticked, but the shield is still not visible. It is a brand new macbook running the latest OS. Would appreciate further suggestions - thanks

    If you fire up Activity Monitor and select "All Processes", do you have SophosAntiVirus, SophosAutoUpdate, SophosUIServer, SophosUpdateMana and Intercheck running?  (you can use the Search box to display everything starting with Sophos, and type in Intercheck for that process)?

    The only times I've had the shield vanish myself are during an update of the actual software (not just the data).  The only time it hasn't come back was when my permissions were in a bad state, so the update failed (and failed again every time after, until I had rebuilt my permissions and rebooted (one file was locked in a bad state).
