Home Antivirus for Mac stops halfway thru scan - just says error

Hi.  I love sophos home antivirus, but it doesn't complete on my mac.  I have a large filesystem with a million objects.  It's been running slow too so I'm sure there is a trojan or two somewhere hiding.  When I try to run a  scan and I've run 3 of them so far, sophos stalls at about 500,000 objects left and does not report an error code that I can see.  Is there a way around this, or is there a way to run scans on the usual suspect directories to get my mac cleaned?

  • When it stalls, does it give you a dialog box stating that the scan fails, or does the progress bar just stop moving forward while still pulsing?

If the second, we've got a thread on here for you ;)  It hasn't really stalled, it's just still scanning an item -- that "item" is most likely a large disk image or other archive, that has to be decompressed and then have all its contents scanned.  Temporarily turning off archive scanning will allow you to quickly perform a surface-level scan across your entire system -- I'd still recommend turning archive scanning back on and run a really long scan however.  You might want to check the scan log to see what archive is taking the long amount of time and create a custom scan with that file excluded, to scan all other archives.

If the first, you might still want to try the above suggestion, but we'd like to know so that we can potentially fix your problem.

  • hi andrew

i have the same problem and get a dialogue box saying ----- scan cannot be completed/an error occurred during scan.

if i switch off archive scanning the scan completes.

how do i find which archive is causing the crash.

cleanappdaemon seems to be referred to a lot in the log. is this an app that could be causing the problem.

any advice would be much appreciated.

    thanks

    ray

  • Is there anything in /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log ?

My first guess would be that you have an archive that is really big... a search for .zip, .dmg and .gz files that are over 100MB might find the culprit.  You may also want to use Disk Utility to verify disk permissions and verify disk, as there could be some file-system-level corruption.

Also, a good suggestion for tracking down the culprit is in this thread: http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Full-Scan-will-not-complete/m-p/3679 -- using Sloth or lsof while you scan should pinpoint the culprit.
