SAV for Mac 9.1 Preview

The engineering team for Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac is happy to announce the availability of a preview of our next significant release for Home Edition. You can download this installer directly from our site using this link:

*** LINK for v9.1 REMOVED - PLEASE VISIT SOPHOS.COM FOR THE LATEST INSTALLER **

It will upgrade an existing 9.0 version if you have one installed and will preserve your existing settings. This update improves stability and performance. No new features, but it addresses issues reported here in the forum.

Now for the FAQ:

  • What does Preview mean? We aren't yet releasing this to all users. We want to get your feedback first, from willing volunteers. Once we are satified this release is good enough for everyone we'll automatically upgrade to this version.
  • Should I reboot after installation? Yes. This version updates the kernel drivers which requires a reboot to be effective. But no need to do it right away. Do it when you are ready.
  • Any new features? Not really. This release addresses issues reported in the forum and brings the Home Edition software up to date with the latest changes in our business versions for Sophos Cloud and on-premise management solutions.
  • Is it safe to run? You've tested it, right? Yes this release has passed our internal quality assurance process. Additionally, the software is nearly the same as what we've been provding to our Sophos Cloud customers for a few months now.

Please post any issues you have, we definitely want to hear about your experience as soon as possible. Thank you!

  • 9.1.6 has appeared in the release notes, but the savosx91_he.zip file still contains 9.1.5. What is the URL to 9.1.6?

    Those notes refer to the business version of the product. There aren't any changes of signifiance in that version that would benefit the Home Edition product, so we haven't published a new Home Edition version yet. Your 9.1.5 installation will automatically upgrade when we release something new.

    We are moving to a different mechanism to publish the release notes soon, should make it easier to understand what got released. It will be labeled by the different packages, since we don't always update them simultaneously. In fact, its a rare day when they get published simultaneously.

    For the curious, we have four separate packages today:

    • Home Edition, which you know and love;
    • the unmanaged (stand alone) business version;
    • a business version managed by Sophos Enterprise Console;
    • a business version managed by Sophos Cloud.

    Each package contains a slightly different feature set, althoug all four are built from the same source code. Hope that helps explain things.

  • I've tried to install the preview and I get the message "The installation failed. The software was not installed successfully. Remove the software and re-install."

    I've tried using the removal tools (http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/121206.aspx) and the Mac version 8 says "Sophos is not installed".

    Version 9 won't open for me so I can't install it after downloading it.

    I have tried restarting my system and also emptying the trash in hopes of cleaning up everything, but I don't know where else to look to find where any traces of a former Sophos install would be on my system.

    I'm running Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.4.

    Thank you for any assistance

    What is the full directory path to get to your Sophos installer app? If there is a non-ASCII character anywhere in the path, such as (in my case) "ß" for the beta version, the installation will fail with the message you've gotten.

  • Hello shupirate9,

    We install files under /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/ as well as in a few system locations:

    • /Applications
    • /Library/LaunchDaemons (look for files starting with com.sophos.)
    • /LIbrary/Extensions (look for bundles starting with Sophos)
    • /Library/LaunchAgents (look for files starting with com.sophos.)

    The remove program should be able to clean things for you. Here is some info: http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Mac-tools-help/Remove-uninstall-Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home-Edition-the-free/m-p/14271

    Several posts down in that thread is a post by ruckus that links to a copy of the remove tool, if you have already deleted the installed copy.

    Hope that helps.

  • bobcook, thank you for your help. I went through all of those locations to delete any traces of the old install and tried to re-install and everything seemed to work now

  • Hi,

    just downloaded version 9.1 becouse of resently update problems with 9.0.11, the update stopped working of and on, so sometimes its working and sometimes not (the 9.0.11 version) manual update almost always works.

    before it al worked fine. so, following your manual i uninstalled 9.0.11 (from applications "Remove Sophos Anti-virus) and rebooted, suprice, Sophos 9.0.11 is still running.

    second advise from your forem, you can install 9.1 over the old version and it will update to the new version and keep your settings, (nice, i have a few like don't scan external backup drives, there is nothing on them that is not on my Mac, so no use, you don't want to scan 6 TB)

    so, i installed 9.1 over the 9.0.11 version becouse i cant uninstall that version, not working, install error (the installation faild)

    any advice?

    And yes, i have the free version, cant insert a pic becouse your upload don't support .tiff

  • Hello Atraveler,

    I admit that I did not follow precisely where things went wrong, but the information we'd be interested to see is contained in the text log "/var/log/install.log" (available in the Console application). There will be lines in the log from Sophos Installer, and the text will tell us what has gone wrong.

    Open the .tiff in Preview than "Save As…" a JPEG file.
