SAV for Mac 9.1 Preview

The engineering team for Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac is happy to announce the availability of a preview of our next significant release for Home Edition. You can download this installer directly from our site using this link:

*** LINK for v9.1 REMOVED - PLEASE VISIT SOPHOS.COM FOR THE LATEST INSTALLER **

It will upgrade an existing 9.0 version if you have one installed and will preserve your existing settings. This update improves stability and performance. No new features, but it addresses issues reported here in the forum.

Now for the FAQ:

  • What does Preview mean? We aren't yet releasing this to all users. We want to get your feedback first, from willing volunteers. Once we are satified this release is good enough for everyone we'll automatically upgrade to this version.
  • Should I reboot after installation? Yes. This version updates the kernel drivers which requires a reboot to be effective. But no need to do it right away. Do it when you are ready.
  • Any new features? Not really. This release addresses issues reported in the forum and brings the Home Edition software up to date with the latest changes in our business versions for Sophos Cloud and on-premise management solutions.
  • Is it safe to run? You've tested it, right? Yes this release has passed our internal quality assurance process. Additionally, the software is nearly the same as what we've been provding to our Sophos Cloud customers for a few months now.

Please post any issues you have, we definitely want to hear about your experience as soon as possible. Thank you!

  • Just installed Sophos 9.1 on 10.9.4 and loaded a bunch (7) of tabs all at once in Firefox while watching Activity Monitor for Web intelligence activity. Compared to what I've seen in Sophos 9.0, there was very little, and I didn't see any delay in page loading!

Tried it again, this time in Opera with The Washington Post and while loading was typically slow, it generated very little CPU usage.

One thing I noticed during installation was that following the instructions, I rebooted after running the 9.1 installer. I then checked the versions both using the About Sophos menu item and Get Info on the application in the Application folder and both came up as still 9.0. I rebooted again and this time the version showed as 9.1.5 in the menu and 9.1.4 in the Application folder.

Just to liven things up a bit, having installed it over Sophos 9.0.11 on both a virtual machine and a Mavericks HD with good results, I decided to install it on my work boot SSD running 10.8.5.

The installation failed with the instruction to remove it and start over. I have a "Sophos Remove.app" v.7.2.4 which was separate from the "Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.app" which was part of the 9.0 install (that had been deleted during the 9.1 installation attempt) and I tried running that but the message returned was that there was nothing to remove, which appeared to be the case since both the 9.0 program and the remover were gone from the Applications folder after the failed attempt. I rebooted and tried again but again it failed. I tried reinstalling Sophos 9.0.7 but again 9.1 failed to install over it. It didn't matter if I rebooted first or not.

After a number of failures, I just went back to 9.0.7 but although the install succeeded, if I then rebooted and forced an update, it stayed at 9.0.7. I then tried the 9.0.6 installer (I archive them) and the same thing happened. Finally, by installing and immediately updating, I got back to 9.0.11.

What's odd is that in the first two instances, the successful install was over 9.0.11 also but it simply worked. In this instance the main difference seems to have been installing in 10.8.5, even though the successful Mavericks install was on a clone of the 10.8.5 partition upgraded to Mavericks. Of possible interest, I have an AppleScript script running which alerts to the addition of LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents and the alerts occur during all of the 9.0 installations this time but not the 9.1 installation attempts in 10.8.5. I believe the alerts did occur during the Mavericks installation. The Applescript isn't on the VM.

Known issue with the Developer Preview.

Oh. My. Version 7.anything is way too old. It won't understand how to uninstall any version 9 software. We made a serious "right turn" in version 9.0 when we stopped using the Apple Installer and instead moved to our own installation technology.

That is odd. If you still have the install.log from those attempts we'd be interested. Look in /var/log, in the Console.app. There should be a whole bunch of messages from the Sophos Installer application.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

  • No more OS X crashes, but this issue still exsits. Nothing infected, issues detected. Also, just completed a scan, and it says 'this has never been completed'.

  • I'm running Sophos 9.0.11.  When I try to install the 9.1 preview I get a message that says:

    "An incompatible product is installed.

This software cannot be installed over he existing installation. No changes were made to the existing installation."

It says above that this should be able to be installed over the version 9 software, so what's going on?  Should I uninstall my current version first?

Also, I may have downloaded my current version from my university, but I can't remember.  Maybe the version provided by my school isn't home edition?

  • Didn't mean to Kudo the message above mine... didn't know what the star did.

Which version of Mac OS X do you have installed?
