SAV for Mac 9.1 Preview

The engineering team for Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac is happy to announce the availability of a preview of our next significant release for Home Edition. You can download this installer directly from our site using this link:

*** LINK for v9.1 REMOVED - PLEASE VISIT SOPHOS.COM FOR THE LATEST INSTALLER **

It will upgrade an existing 9.0 version if you have one installed and will preserve your existing settings. This update improves stability and performance. No new features, but it addresses issues reported here in the forum.

Now for the FAQ:

  • What does Preview mean? We aren't yet releasing this to all users. We want to get your feedback first, from willing volunteers. Once we are satified this release is good enough for everyone we'll automatically upgrade to this version.
  • Should I reboot after installation? Yes. This version updates the kernel drivers which requires a reboot to be effective. But no need to do it right away. Do it when you are ready.
  • Any new features? Not really. This release addresses issues reported in the forum and brings the Home Edition software up to date with the latest changes in our business versions for Sophos Cloud and on-premise management solutions.
  • Is it safe to run? You've tested it, right? Yes this release has passed our internal quality assurance process. Additionally, the software is nearly the same as what we've been provding to our Sophos Cloud customers for a few months now.

Please post any issues you have, we definitely want to hear about your experience as soon as possible. Thank you!

I'm running Sophos 9.0.11.  When I try to install the 9.1 preview I get a message that says:

    "An incompatible product is installed.

This software cannot be installed over he existing installation. No changes were made to the existing installation."

...Also, I may have downloaded my current version from my university, but I can't remember.  Maybe the version provided by my school isn't home edition?

I just came upon the following in the SAV 9.1 release notes:

"Tamper protection. Tamper protection helps prevent unauthorized users and known malware from uninstalling disabling Sophos security software. When enabled, certain changes will require the tamper protection password rather than the local administrator password. Note that if your organization has a group policy that already enables tamper protection, tamper protection will immediately become effective on any computers on which you install the 9.1.4 Preview release."

I wonder if that's what's going on, considering where your copy came from. Uninstalling 9.0 certainly constitutes a change so perhaps you need the tamper protection password.

  • I'm pretty sure it's not the tamper protection thing, the window that comes up looks like the typical system authentication window.  Also, I don't ever recall setting up a tamper protection password (and certainly have no idea what it would be).

I'm running 10.9.4.  I recently upgraded from 10.6.8 and since then have been experiencing regular system freezes (thanks Apple!).  I am trying to install Sophos 9.1 to possibly remedy that situation.

  • Googling the error shows the right post on here :smileyhappy:...

It says above that this should be able to be installed over the version 9 software, so what's going on?  Should I uninstall my current version first?

Also, I may have downloaded my current version from my university, but I can't remember.  Maybe the version provided by my school isn't home edition?

Your guess is correct - the version your school provided must not be the Home Edition. For a variety of reasons, we don't allow mixing and matching the different types of installations.

As long as you are an administrator of your Mac, you can uninstall the current version from your school and then install the Home Edition, if you like. The uninstall program can be found in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus, its called Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.app.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks Bob.  Here's more information about my installation:

    Version 9.0.11

    Threat detection engine: 3.51.0

    Threat data 5.01

I attend the University of Washington

Any chance that tells you more about what I'm running?

I'm getting the same type of freezing issues described by others that have pointed me to this upgrade (except that mine don't only last for 10 minutes).  I'm running 10.9.4 and use Time Machine.

What are the differences between what I'm running and HE?  If there are significant differences, are there any upgrades planned for what I'm running that will solve my problem?

    I appreciate your help.

    EDIT:

Turns out I'm running "opm-sa".  Any major differences between this and HE?

  • Hi Ben,

The first bullet of this article applies... http://sophos.com/kb/119182... you have been given the 'corporate' version of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac free of charge by your university (but not the free for all 'Home Edition') and wherever the installation is updating from it's only getting 9.0.11 and not the preview 9.1.5 - and 9.1.x is the one you need to install help with the problems.

Because you cannot 'upgrade' any corporate edition to Home Edition (nor vice versa) as you'll get this problem, you'll have to uninstall and then reinstall as separate steps.

To resolve the problems I suggest you:

    1. Remove the existing corporate version of the program from your computer using article http://sophos.com/kb/119182
    2. Download the SAV for Mac Home Edition 9.1.x preview and install that.
      http://downloads.sophos.com/home-edition/savosx91_he.zip
    3. Reboot and see how it goes.

For any specific version there is very little difference between the different product types. In your case, "opm-sa" is an internal label that indicates this is the business version, compatible with the same software as for our on-premise management system Sophos Enterprise Console, but its not actually centrally managed.

But you are running 9.0 and you really should be running 9.1. Depending on your university's policy, you may be able to acquire the 9.1 preview version from them. Unfortunately I cannot send you a copy.

  • Thanks Bob.

I went ahead and uninstalled my existing version and installed 9.1.  I'll post to let you know whether or not it seems to solve my problem.

    :1018403
  • Still getting regular crashes.  I'm going to remove Sophos altogether for awhile and see if that makes a difference.  I suspect that this is actually an Apple problem, but it's worth a shot.  I can't do anything with my computer in this state.

    :1018405
  • I have been using the preview version, 9.1.5 now, on OSX 10.9.4 and haven't had any crashes. The slowdowns while browsing seem to be less frequent than previous versions. They still occur but rarely and even then they don't seem to slow things down as much as they used to.
