SAV for Mac 9.1 Preview

The engineering team for Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac is happy to announce the availability of a preview of our next significant release for Home Edition. You can download this installer directly from our site using this link:

*** LINK for v9.1 REMOVED - PLEASE VISIT SOPHOS.COM FOR THE LATEST INSTALLER **

It will upgrade an existing 9.0 version if you have one installed and will preserve your existing settings. This update improves stability and performance. No new features, but it addresses issues reported here in the forum.

Now for the FAQ:

  • What does Preview mean? We aren't yet releasing this to all users. We want to get your feedback first, from willing volunteers. Once we are satified this release is good enough for everyone we'll automatically upgrade to this version.
  • Should I reboot after installation? Yes. This version updates the kernel drivers which requires a reboot to be effective. But no need to do it right away. Do it when you are ready.
  • Any new features? Not really. This release addresses issues reported in the forum and brings the Home Edition software up to date with the latest changes in our business versions for Sophos Cloud and on-premise management solutions.
  • Is it safe to run? You've tested it, right? Yes this release has passed our internal quality assurance process. Additionally, the software is nearly the same as what we've been provding to our Sophos Cloud customers for a few months now.

Please post any issues you have, we definitely want to hear about your experience as soon as possible. Thank you!

  • Is it still timely to install this Preview from the link on the first comment page? Or will a revised/final version be coming soon that I should wait for? Currently at 9.0.11, Threat detection 3.51.0, threat data 5.01 after updating most recently.

  • I Installed it and its running smooth, a lot less errors in console, like the "broken pipe error"

if you trust yourself on your Mac, like i do, have fun and play with it

  • Any known compatibility/incompatibility with other antivirus/malware programs for Mac OSX?

(I got the offer to install Trend Micro Titanium Mac AV recently -- bundled when a family member paid for their Windows version -- and found that warns the user to delete Sophos before Trend is installed -- don't know if that's a marketing or a real requirement, and don't know if Sophos will install happily on a machine with the Trend AV in place)

  • Hello hank,

two AV scanners with an (active) on-access (aka real-time) component will very likely clash and delays, unresponsiveness and crashes will be the consequence of more than one installed. Thus most products either attempt to remove competitor products or refuse to get installed.

    Hello hank,

We generally don't offer support for this type of deployment.

No known incompatibilities - but we don't test this scenario, so you are going to be on your own. No idea if Trend does any specific testing for this scenario either.

I can speculate about two possible negative product interactions: competing on-access scanners where an identified threat keeps bouncing back and forth between the two product's quarantine; and system freeze while one on-access scanner is tied up waiting for the other on-access scanner to release a given file, which is waiting on something that the first scanner is holding on to. Classic deadlock scenario. No idea if our product has these issues, or if the Trend product has these issues, but as a software developer I can imagine very bad scenarios happening.

That probably isn't helpful, but I'd like to hear more about your success or failure.

  • OK. I did go ahead and had Trend Micro installed. So I tried and the Sophos 9.1 preview installed without complaining about Trend being installed (unlike Trend installer, which had wanted Sophos uninstalled first) That did give me both products installed and both defaulted to active scanning, nothing awful happened but it did seem a bit slow, so I went to the preferences Trend Micro has preferences for "Real-time scanning" and "Detect web threats" and the menu pulldown "Detect Web Threats" with/without checkmark Sophos has preferences for "Live protection" and "Web protection" and the menu pulldown "On-access scanning is disabled/enabled" I'm guessing those are equivalents. Appreciating your caution, I've run a day at a time with either Trend or Sophos having those options enabled. That seems to be OK with either product, and the other will do a full or partial system scan.

  • For feedback to the Sophos team, the console of my host has this message continuously in the log after running the upgrade to 9.1.5:

    16/09/14 11:18:57.463 am scanserver[1497]: [main.m:119] server started!
    16/09/14 11:19:01.442 am scanserver[1497]: [SMEScanOperation.m:115] SAVI initialization failed
16/09/14 11:19:01.442 am scanserver[1497]: [SMEPoolManager.m:139] worker init failed... shutting down
    16/09/14 11:19:01.442 am scanserver[1497]: [main.m:136] Scan server shutting down...
    16/09/14 11:19:01.446 am scanserver[1497]: [main.m:159] Server stopped

The scanner appears to be identifying threats in my email, etc... so it is at least partially working. This is an in-place upgrade of the savosx_90_he.zip installer.

I am running OS X 10.9.4 and Sophos 9.1.5 Home Edition (free).

  • Hello MrGreenNZ,

The first update after install will correct this issue.
