When running a virus scan, Sophos will not stop "Calculating..."

I've been using Sophos for Mac Home Edition for over a year now, with no problems.  Until a month ago.  My hard drive crashed and I had to get a new HDD installed in my iMac.  I installed Mountain Lion on this new drive and used Migration Assistant to reinstall everything else back onto my hard drive from a Time Machine backup.  Ever since, I have been unable to run a virus scan using Sophos.  When I try to "..scan all files and folders on my Mac," Sophos Anti-Virus begins by "Calculating..." - but it never moves on to the scanning phase.  Last night, it ran like this for more than two hours without ever beginning the scan.  After all this time, it still said "Calculating...".  The Sophos version installed on my iMac is 8.06C.  I have already tried uninstalling Sophos and reinstalling.  To no avail.  Does anybody know what is going on here?  And how I can fix it?

  • This is really bizarre...  in addition to my iMac, the problems with which I have described above, I also have a MacBook Air on which I installed Mountain Lion.  And it is also running Sohphos for Mac Home Edition 8.0.6C.  I tried running a manual scan yesterday, and unlike on my iMac, Sohpos seems to scan my Air the way it is supposed to.  The program does its "Calculating..." for about a minute or two, then begins scanning like it is supposed to.

However... yesterday, when I ran the MacBook Air scan, when I made the selection to do a manual scan of "...all files and folders on this Mac," it did not offer me the three usual administrative choices: (1) Scan with Current Priviliges, (2) Cancel, or (3) Scan All.  It only offered the first two.  So when I selected the only choice to proceed, "Scan with Current Priviliges," the program it not prompt me for my administrative password like it does when offered the choice to "Scan All."  This was my first clue that something might be awry.  Anyway, the program proceeded to do its thing, spending an hour and a half or so scanning all 685K of the files that are installed. When it got the end of its scanning process, it indicated two threats had been detected, and that both of them could be cleaned up.  When I tried to select either one of them for clean-up, I had to first unlock the administrative lock in the lower left corner of the scan window - usually done by inputting my administrative password.  But the program did not offer me the choice to do that.  When I clicked on the lock it just did not react at all and remained locked.  I was totally unable to do anything to clean up the threats that were found by the Sophos program.  What is going on here??!!  These unusual problems I am experiencing on BOTH my iMac and my Air are going to force me to switch to an antivirus program that actually works, if Sophos cannot get its act together and fix their software!  This is especially important because I know I really do have threats out there on my computer that need to be cleaned up!!  HELP!!

  • Don't I just feel really dumb...  The issue I described above was quickly fixed with a reboot of my MacBook Air.  Once I had logged in as administrator again, the Sophos anti-virus program worked just fine.  Before starting its scan, it gave me THREE choices, like it is supposed to do.  And the 2 threats that were quarantined were cleaned up without a fuss.  Please just ignore my whining in my previous post.  I was out of line and wrong.  However...  my first issue with the never-ending barber pole and endless "Calculating..." is still very much a problem on my iMac.

  • Thanks for the update!  I have to admit the previous post had me scratching my head.  Now we get back to the barber pole issue.... I believe the product team is looking at trying to replicate that, but attempting to isolate the issue in the forums is definitely a worthwhile task (especially for thos experiencing it who don't mind fiddling with settings and reading log files).
