Updating is disabled

I just installed Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition and the "Update Now" option is grayed out. When I look at the log, it appears that I'm running virus definitions that are a week old. Is seems to be that updating is broken altogether. Are manuals updates required or is something broken in my installation?

  • Hello remodb,

normally Update Now should be only greyed when an update is in progress, but then you'd see the animated icon. Is the Cancel Update also grey?

What in the logs makes you think the definitions are a week old? Have you tried Show AutoUpdate Window? What does it say?

  • Thank you for the reply. My apologies for not noticing it earlier (subscription settings were set incorrectly).

Both the "Update Now" and "Cancel Update" menu selections are grayed out and unavailable. When I type 'sweep -v' in Terminal I get the following output:

    bash-3.2# sweep -v

And the '/Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/IDE' folder is completely empty. When I select "Show AutoUpdate Window" it states that "Sophos AUtoUpdate is not configured. When I go into Preferences/AutoUpdate the option to check every hour is checked and the update primary location is listed as "Sophos" but none of those options are editable.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Something seems misconfigured here.

I'd suggest uninstalling SAV, repairing permissions and verifying disk, and then re-installing SAV from here: http://downloads.sophos.com/home-edition/savosx_73_he.dmg

(link above will soon be out of date, but the current link on the downlaods page appears to be incorrect).  If the above link no longer works, download the latest version from the web site.

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled current v8 and all's fine.

  • Did a complete uninstall of Version 7 on my 500 mghz PowerBoook (G3 PPC) running Mac OS 10.4.11, did perfectly clean download and install of Version 8 (restarted, corrected permissions, etc.)... within 5-10 mins max of running, it shuts off AutoUpdate and displays an "x" within the Sophos icon at the top of the screen. Sophos log shows nothing unusual, but system's Console log reports that AutoUpdate CRASHED. Restarting the computer results in a complete replication of the problem EVERY time (i.e. at first Sophos icon appears properly - with "S" in it - but shortly thereafter the "S" is replaced with an "x" and the system's Console log reports that AutoUpdate crashed again).

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I've looked through this board's site but don't see anything directly related to this issue; maybe it's a bug specific to PPC's (or G3 PPC's) running 10.4.11???

  • I'd like to ditto the post above.  Running on a G3-800 iBook with 10.4.11 (768MB RAM), and AutoUpdate refuses to start or set a preference.  When attempting to change the prefs, error message just reports "Unable to set AutoUpdate preference."  I tried deleting plist file and restarting, but problem remains.  Any suggestions?

  • What version of SAV are you running?
