.. if this has been asked and answered before!

I installed the software and used it for about 6 weeks before uninstalling it and reverting to iAntivirus. The reason - it crippled the launch speed of a number of applications and made others run so slowly that the benefits of having a Mac (It just Works) were completely negated.

Have others had similar issues? Can anything be done to stop or at least reduce this effect? Thanks.

  • If the referenced applications were Java-based, this is likely because you have "scan inside archives" turned on for on-access scanning.  Turn this off, and see if this fixes your problem.

That said, would you please list the applications that are having these issues?  Also, what OS and Mac version are you using?  I ask because I've tested a number of configurations with Java-based apps and after the first launch, I haven't had many issues even with archive scanning turned on.

The two most affected applications are Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 and an Open University specific piece of software used for marking student assignments. The latter is definitely Java based as I've corresponded with the developer about this issue.

My Mac is a 24" iMac 2.4 ghz duo 2 core processor and 2 Gb RAM OS10 version 10.6.6

  • Thanks!  I'm sure this will help out both the dev team and support going forward.  The Office for Mac 2008 issue seems a bit odd to me though.  Maybe it's due to docx etc. files being zipped archives?

Have you attempted turning off archive scanning for on-access?

Have re-installed Sophos and unchecked the archive scanning. This has made a significant difference to the OU specific software. This now opens as per 'normal' and the icon does not just sit and 'bounce' on the dock. As assignments are usually in MS Word, this too opens with minimum delay. Thanks for your help.

    Best wishes
