Sophos stops working when my mac starts up

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm using a mac (10.6.8) and have the latest sophos 8.04C - every time I close down my mac and restart it the next morning Sophos stops working and wont allow me to change anything at all via preferences. If I just put my mac to sleep there's no problem at all when it wakes up and sophos continues to work.

If I download the sophos software again everything works smoothly until the next time I shut down my mac ..........!

Maybe I'm missing something - perhaps I've got one of the settings wrong, perhaps my OS wont work with the latest sophos - I just don't know!

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Can you please give me an update of where you and your team are with my problem - I do hope that you can come up with a solution soon because my Mac is umprotected whilst I'm waiting.

    Thanks

  • Are you continuing to have this problem with 8.0.5?  This problem is actually many problems all exhibiting the same symptoms.  I know at least some of those problems have been fixed.

IPC sockets are how different pieces of software communicate with each other, which means Intercheck is failing to talk to some other software it expects to respond, which isn't -- likely the kernel extension or autoupdate.

It seems to me that SAV shouldn't need IPC until after the login process is complete and autoupdate begins its check.

Would you be able to post a list of kernel extensions that you have loading?  It should be available  by selecting Extensions in System Information.app (available from Apple->About This Mac->More Info...)

  • Uninstalled 8.0.4 and downloaded 8.0.5 - still same problem.

I'm not too hot on too much technical stuff so I'm not sure if the following is what you asked for?

    BSDKernel

    BSDkernel6.0

    Thanks

  • In a way, it's good to know that you're experiencing the same problem (frustrating for you though) -- as this means that the issue is likely due to your specific setup and can be corrected on your end given enough time and patience, assuming you're willing to put in that level of work.

In the meantime, I'd recommend keeping on-access scanning disabled (which it appears to do for you anyway) and creating some scheduled scans -- weekly for your entire computer, and daily for your download folder, desktop, and anywhere else you regularly store files.

You can get to the list of kernel extensions by opening up About This Mac... from the apple menu, clicking on "More Info..." and clicking the Extensions listing.  You'll likely have to wait a minute or so, and then an entire list of loaded extensions will show up.  With this, I should be able to see if there's something loading at startup that may be interfering with Intercheck's ability to communicate with other processes.  I'll also probably be getting you to check for processes that start at login, which may involve a bit of typing in terminal.app.  If it comes to that, I'll give you specific instructions on how to do it.

  • Hi

I can access the extensions but there are approx 150 of them - and although I can "select all" but it wont let me copy/paste. I could take screenshots - am I able to post screenshots here?

  • Hello Mike,

am I able to post screenshots here

unfortunately not. But you could load them up to some site like ImageShack and include the link in your post (using the "picture of a tree" icon).

  • Hi

Just uploaded some screenshots of the extensions - they can be found here:

    Thanks

  • Thanks!  You probably won't hear more from me for a few weeks, but I'll check for incompatabilities.  If anyone else on the forum wants to compare extensions in a 10.6.8 environment and see if there are differences in the meantime, be my guest :)

  • I just uninstalled and then re-installed version 8.05c. worked like a charm. The On-Access function now works.

    Running OSX 10.7.3

    Thanks,
