Balloon Messages

Morning All.

Is there anyway to suppress the balloon messages about contacting the safeguard server.

I can see a policy to check how often it polls the server. Ideally we only want the balloon message to appear if an actual new policy has been assigned and applied. Not a no changes this time message every 90 minutes.

Many thanks

K.

    Hi K,

Thank you for posting your question in the SophosTalk forums.

Yes that not a problem. You do this by changing your Specific Machine Settings category policy. After you select your policy, then scroll down to 'Enable and show the system tray icon' and change the drop-down box from 'Yes' to 'Silent'. Click Save, force a sync on the endpoint and annoying balloon messages go away.  :smileyhappy:

  • Thanks for that.

I've just applied the setting and hopefully that will kick in when the policies next apply.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • HI,

I am an end user with this client installed on my local machine. Can I disable these ballons myself, or does an administrator need to do it?

  • Because it is technically a Policy change, it has to be made on the Management Center side by an administrator. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this on the client side.

  • Ok,

As an end user, who frankly has no idea what this software does or why it's installed on my machine (no need to explain, I don't really care), I have to say these balloons are super annoying, and I can't believe they aren't limited by default. I'll work with my IT team to get rid of them.

Basically, all I know about your company is that you place annoying balloon pop ups on my desktop multiple times a day. It seems like there is an easy fix for you guys to change that perception.

    Thanks!

I understand your frustration. Unfortunately, it is your company's policies that allow the balloons. There is an option as stated above for a "silent" mode. Then the only time you get a popup is when you initiate a sync on the client side. Otherwise all other balloons are hidden.

If this is a company wide complaint, it may be best to let the administrator of the encryption software at your company know so that they can make that change.

And I too hate balloons with a passion. :smileywink:

  • Sorry,

I get that it's a company wide policy. My assumption was the default for this was that it was set to On, because I can't see what value there would be in enabling it, other then for testing during roll out. I am recommending that Sophos recommend to their clients that that setting is disabled AND that when installing the software, the default is set to off.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Just to close the loop, a colleague of mine showed me I can turn the balloons off myself.

I am using Windows 7. In the taskbar icon area, you select "customize". The you can change the behaviour of all of the icons that appear there. I changes the Sophos one to "Hide Icon and Notification". And bang, it's gone.
