Long Boot Time after SGN Client install (Safeguard Enterprise 5.40)

We are using Dell E4300 Notebooks with a downgrade of Windows 7 Ultimate to XP Pro SP3. I took an original machine installed XP Pro SP3 + Our software and did a SYSPREP to roll the image out to multiple laptops. This image DOES NOT have any SAFEGUARD software on it yet. I take a new laptop and load the image onto the hard drive. I boot it. Register XP/Office/Acrobat/AVG etc. Add the Domain user account Configure Email/ Proxy etc... etc... Reboot a couple of times.. to test reboot time. (All less than 1 minute) I then load the Safeguard software and Client Config. I wait a minute or so after the install is confirmed. Reboot ... and it takes 6+ minutes to load. I remove the Safeguard Client software and we go back to less than a minute. Anyone have any ideas? I'm on the latest BIOS. Out of 5 machines ... only 1 has no problems. All were loaded the same way.

  • Hi Walt750,

Thanks for that copious amount of detail. The one thing that I was looking for was if the drive was encrypted or not when you saw the boot delays. I don't believe it will make any difference, I'm just curious. Adding FDE software will increase the boot time because the kernel needs to load, but it should take far less than 6 minutes.

I'm not familiar with the Dell E4300 so would you be able to tell us if the BIOS is set in APIC mode? If so, when the SGN Client is starting press Shift+F9 just after it reads, "SafeGuard Enterprise is starting. please wait..." You have about 3 seconds. If you did it successfully then you will see the APIC mode has been toggled on. That Shift+F9 hotkey toggle will be saved on reboot.

Please let us know if that solved the issue and I will post how to make it apart of your install. If not, then we will try something else.

  • Hi,

I have installed SGN 5.40 on a Dell Latitude E6400.  I am experiencing very long boot times (ranging 5 - 15 mins).  I have enabled APIC mode which if anything made the boot time longer.

There are 2 encrypted disks on this laptop both just under 60GB each.  I am using a token with a PIN for POA - the sophos safeguard logon loads promptly but when I insert the PIN and select ok the windows splash screen is taking forever to load into windows.

Any ideas/thoughts would be much appreciated - I can not roll this out to the masses with these boot times.

    Many thanks,

    Lee.

  • Hi Lee,

Thanks for visiting the forum.  Based on the information you provided, it will be too challenging to determine the root cause through this forum. I suggest that you engage Sophos Support to help bring what you are experiencing to resolution.

  • Thanks David.

I will take this up with Sophos support.

    Regards, Lee.

  • I will check with Support. However I was hoping to get someone to look at this online. We are short staffed and we do EVERYTHING from Printer Cartridges to VMWARE ESX servers... I'm stretched and so is my co-worker.

One thing that is common is that both our systems are DELL and we both seem to be using Tokens. We are using Checkpoint VPN-1 Secure Remote Client.

We load Checkpoint First. Checkpoint binds itself to the kernel. After a reboot we install Safeguard Entersprise as the last item before a user handoff. Unfortunately as you mentioned... the boot time makes it so you can't give it to the user ... so we have been removing SafeGuard ... and giving it to them un-encrypted.

I now have another 5 new PC's that I cannot add Safeguard Enterprise to. Any online help will benefit users with the same issue.

  • Hi,

Did you get Support and did you get a resolution for the long boot time? If yes, can you please share on the forum what was the solution?
