Keyboard is not working on POA, Lenovo L412 and SafeGaurd Easy are using

Hi All

My company purchased over 20 units of Lenovo x201i and L412. All of them installed Safeguard Easy ver.5.50.8.13. For the x201i, it works perfect. But for the L412, the keyboard became not working (mouse worked fine) on the POA screen. I need to use the virtual keyboard to key in my name and password. After got passed the POA and logged into the Windows, it works normally. Definately, it is not accepted to use the virtual keyboard everytime. So, I would like to seek help from here.

Some more details, I am using the built-in keyboard, that means not a external keyboard. Using Windows XP SP3. And I believe I tried all the hot key combination.

I have to deploy my notebooks to the end user. So please anyone here can help!~

  • I am having a similar problem with a Lenovo SL510. Also running 5.50.8.13.

  • similar problem here:

Lenovo L412 and L515: first password input is allways wrong, second is allways working...

    Lenovo T410s works fine.

  • othu: your problem is not so worst than mine. at least you can login to the Windows.

Anyway, with luck, I tried Shift F5 today, and now can use my keyboard. But this rise another issue, that is, hang in POA screen over 30 mins. after I pressed the correct user name and password.

This software seems so much bugs.

  • HI all,

thank you very much for brining this one up! I have reviewed your answers / posts and I can tell you that we are not aware of any general issues with these models!

However, the approach from me43079 to use the available hot keys is the right track. There since there are multiple hot keys available you should try them to find a solution.

@mw43079: Maybe you want to try Shift F7 as well on your machine?

You can all find a list and a description of the available hot keys and how to apply them in our knowledge base under

http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/108971.html or by checking this one http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/111919.html

Should this approach not bring up a solution please open a ticket with your local help desk and we will then further analyze these issues!

One thing that I noticed on our L412 machines were that the first time you press a key on the keyboard, it doesn't correctly register, but after that it types as normal.  I wonder if that's why your password input isn't working the first time.

  • Same Problem here with Lenovo L412 and current bios. Keyboard does not work. Solution is Shift + F5 (Kernel with no USB).

  • HI flux,

thank you very much for providing your findings. One question: Do you require Sift F5 to use the keyboard at POA level or after POA level?

There are a couple of things disussed in this thread

    Thank you!

  • Same problem here. SafeGuard 5.50.8, Notebooks Lenovo Thinkpad L412 and Lenovo Thinkpad Edge models.

At boot, the keyboard is not working. Hotkey F5 helps. But after booting with hotkey applied, the first key that a user is pressing at POA is ignored. Second keystroke and all subsequent ones are working. So there is big chance that the first time user tries to enter password, that this password is wrong since a character is missing.

What can we do to bring keyboard back to normal behaviour? Situation is very confusing for end-users in our company!

  • Hi all,

thank you very much for bringing up the keystroke topic.

We are currently investigating this behavior. At this point there is no timeline available but I will update you as soon as we have any feedback.

  • hi guys,

I have a fixed this exact problem

You need to change registry settings as follows

Win 7 32 bit Professional edition

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Utimaco\Safeguard Enterprise\BaseEncryption

change NoLegacy DWORD to a value of 0

change NoUSB20 DWORD to a value of 0

I have disabled USB legacy support in system BIOS only not in SafeGuard as this disabling in BIOS seems to disable within POA.

I don't remember reading anything about this in manuals...
