Lost passphrase

A user moved a large amount of photos from their local drive to a Toshiba portable drive with Safeguard Portable on it. These files became encrypted automatically, and opening the software it shows the key as belonging to this user.

The issues arises in that they do not recall ever setting a passphrase. I do not see any option to recover or reset a key passphrase.

What are the options for getting these files decrypted?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi Eman,

as long as the key is in the keyring the user will be able to decrypt the files at any time via the context menu if this is enabled in the policy.

Access to files via passphrase is only required when using local created keys and if these files should be opened on a machine w/o SafeGuard Enterprise installed using SGPortable.

    Regards

  • I have a similar problem. The files on a Removable USB Drive got encrypted. I am trying to open them on another computer and they show with a little green key next to my name. I have tried many passphrases, but I cannot remember the one I used when the system was first installed on my new Sony Vaio notebook. I cannot find any place that will ask me how to recover the passphrase, or send it to me, or have any hints. I have been trying for a couple of weeks without any luck.

  • you won't have access to the passphrase unless you signed the file with a seperate local only passphrase you specified.  If you have Data Exchange installed and working then all your keyring needs is the correct key it was signed under.
