Rename PureMessage Service account

Installing v3.1.2 on Exchange 2010 SP2 I didnt have an option to name the service account to be in line with our naming convention only a button to create the account.

Are there any issues in renaming the account from the default SophosPureMessage?

Thanks,

Kos

  • Hi,

Based on the number of changes required within PureMessage if the service account name were to be modified, it is recommended to uninstall PureMessage and then reinstall if you need to use a different account.

Although there are visible references to the account within the XML files and then the registry with the account's SSID, there are other internal calls to the account name that can't be directly modified. So from a support standpoint, the easiest option is to reinstall to avoid unpredictible behaviour.

  • That doesnt work as when you install it creates the SophosPureMessage service account.

I've tried reassigning the SQL account and changing the logon account for the PureMessage service but it fails to start.

    Any other suggestions?

  • Actually, if you do have an existing account that has the appropriate permissions, you can select that account during the install of PureMessage. Take a look at the existing permissions that the SophosPureMessage service account had and ensure the account you created matches permission.

However, based on the errors you're seeing after modifying the account without uninstalling, if setting the service back to the original account doesn't help, an uninstall/reinstall is going to be needed here. As a precaution, do call into our support line and one of our support engineers can look over your environment closely to see what's going on and assist accordingly.
